Moving back to Hull this Sunday to finish my third and final year of university. Doing Media and culture studies with a little bit of linguistics and some social studies and citizenship slapped in there as well. I'm also taking Japanese this year as a language in hopes of furthering my understanding of it. I did want to do Russian...but my mum said no. ¬_¬

I'm really hoping third year covers the media part of my course. It was originally called digital media and culture studies...but they are slowly phasing out the media part, which annoyed me as I was told we'd study cinematography.

I probably wont take any cosplay stuff to uni this year as I'm not going to October expo (way too many people went in May and it freaked me out, and October is said to have over 60 thousand people going according to some of the con staff), and I don't really have time or the cash to make anything for May. D:

*Takes a deep breath and hides herself behind a large brick wall*

Word of advice to first time uni goers (Which will probably get replies of 'yeah we know, shut up' or 'Gtfo' knowing my luck. ;-; ), please please check your housing contract. Know it inside and out and keep a spare copy. Some student land lords and halls of residence can be really nasty in regards to students and money. Check if your contract says your deposit is refundable or not(A lot of student houses demand a deposit upfront which is damage control for if you destroy the house). A lot of student land lords will try and take your deposit off you for the smallest thing or tell you its 'non refundable' without mentioning this in the contract.

As of April 6, 2007, when a tenant pays a deposit for an assured shorthold tenancy in England or Wales, the landlord or letting agent must protect and put the deposit into a Government-backed tenancy deposit scheme. This is incase their is a dispute about the deposit, then a impartial party can externally moderate the dispute. Check that he has done this and IF he hasn't, you can take him to court and he can be fined three times the amount of the deposit if he's not with the scheme and is refusing to give the deposit back.

Its something all students should know in my books, because having disputes about deposits with land lords is very common with students and housing. I can count over twelve people I know who have all had problems with deposits. Student land lords like to throw around the words 'lawsuit' and 'court proceedings' to make students crap themselves and part with deposits that are rightfully theirs.

Also report ANY damage to your landlord, even if its there before you move in and you notice it as you're unpacking.
Half the time the land lord doesn't know their is damage and might see it later and charge you for it. So check and note any damages already in the property and let your landlord know. This includes any problems with mice, rats or slugs, as they do tend to be common in student houses. Generally in halls you don't get mice, but its not unheard of. Keep your room and house/halls tidy and leave no food laying around or you will get mice and they are a BUGGER to get rid of. Leave no food or crumbs laying around and you'll be fine. Live like a slob? Get mice and possibly rats and then you have to deal with them yourself, as most land lords will not remove mice if they are YOUR doing. (Rats don't count, if you get rats or already have rats it MUST be reported to the council, they are an extreme health hazard and must be removed post haste.)

Oh, and check your moving in and moving out policies with your halls of residence or your student housing. Once you enter and sign a contract it is legally binding. For some this is the first legal contract they will sign and you need to check it carefully. If you sign a contract and then try and move out before the contract has expired, chances are they may not let you, OR they will let you and make you pay a portion of the rent. For example, when I was in halls of residence the contract stated that if you moved out you payed ALL the rent due for the room for the ENTIRE year. Regardless of if you were still using it. Some might say to you 'Find a replacement tenant and you don't need to pay rent' which is fine, but double check and if in doubt go to your student union for advice.

I've had almost every problem in the book when it comes to living in student housing. From loud room mates, mice, slugs, theft, bullies, threats, skanky landlords, unhelpful univesity to friends falling out so while people are probably rolling their eyes at my long post, I do mean well because it really sucks not knowing some of the stuff that happens with some uni accomodation. I wished i'd known about more of this stuff in my first year, otherwise i'd not be up to my eyeballs in debt. <3

...Yeah. I'll leave now. I feel dumb for giving out so much info. D:

I'm coming from the middle of Belgium to go to Cardiff...a bit of a way, but not too bad.

As far as I know, the anime society borrows the sewing room for making cosplay together but I'll be bringing my own machine too. I'm studying Japanese and Spanish, and most of the others in my Japanese course chose it because of anime so I'm sure I'll find a fellow cosplayer or two in my class =3

You're coming to Cardiff? Its an amazing uni, and the anime society is awesome *proud member*. Last year we didnt use the sewing rooms but we did have some cosplay making sessions in some lecture halls! Not sure of the plan this year: it keeps changing o.o
Look forward to meeting you in the Cardiff Anime Society ^^

I'm so glad someone here is at Cardiff! Cosplay making sessions sounds really fun! I can use enthusiasm every now and again XP Really looking foward to checking out the Society and meeting you guys!~

I'm moving to Stafford on Sunday, have already met a number of people online who are at least interested in cosplay, so I think I'll be alright XD am hopefully going to join the anime club there too~

My parents are making me take ALL my cosplay so they can utilise my room as a computer room while I'm away, so I'm hoping it won't clog up the room. Although I'm sharing with my friend who also cosplays so it shouldn't be too bad

After sorting MANY rent problems with my accommodation (damn new company taking over), I'll be moving back into my room this weekend. <33 My cosy, cosy uni room, complete with NEW girls on the Hall. Hopefully nicer.

I recommend anyone moving to a different city to look for a job there IMMEDIATELY. Seriously, it will help your financial problems, as I had many in my first year.

Also I don't suppose anyone's attending Birmingham City University this year? May sound sad but I could do with meeting someone new, who cosplays, LOL.

A Kira Pembrose is studying psychology, tell her Charlotte told you to say hi if you happen to run into her! She hasn't cosplayed but she'll know what the word means..

Another thing for people to check about uni - how the post works. Find out where it is delivered, where things that don't fit through the letterbox go, what happens if something needs signing for and you're not in, and where it goes if you miss it. Can't miss all our cosplay bits now!

Please do join the society ^^ We're all a bit mad but when I first joined, I was made really welcome c:

No (although that is a good question though!) I ment freshers events, youve got to pre buy some of the tickets cause you cant get them on the door. Haha! im no batman, who in my opinion is a rubbish super hero, face it if he didnt have all that cash hed just be a guy who likes to wander around wearing tights in his spare time, just doesnt seem very super in my mind, should just be classesd as a hero really, but thats kinda off the point.
2 days! I t feels so strange!

You sound nervous ^^;; I dunno anything about freshers or anything like that, I'll probably just be in my room all the time sticking anime posters up and generally making it feel more homely ^^

And YES I agree with that batman thing but I'm glad he used his money for good instead of evil. He could have quite easily opened up a chain of supermarkets across gotham city, but he chose to fight crime instead.

Im not really nervous, just a bit weirded out by the whole thing, it'll be fine once im there =) I haven't got much to make my room homey in the anime department, but im sure I can change that =), Saving up for cosplay stuff for kita 2011, costing a bomb so far.

Very true ^^ although batman superstores would be a entertaining spin off.

The walls in my room make it near impossible for my posters to stick up T___T

going to buy some tape D8<

I've been at uni over a week now and totally loving it.

Within ten minutes of arriving in halls I'd found another anime fan (just next door but one ). A second year too, so she gave me the info on the various anime clubs.

As I was introduced to all the second years the main concensus was "oh no, not ANOTHER Sophie!"

I think I found the best hall ever...I'm so understood here XD

How's everyone finding things? Found other anime fans yet?

I moved back the other day and my room is now suitably filled with my fabulous 'geeky' belongings 8D
Met up with my anime society on friday evening, and yesterday we had a cheese-tasting day and a pokemon marathon 8D

So yeah, uni life going pretty well so far~

Aaaaaah uni sucks so much The people are really not my kinda people and nobody seems to care about one another, you go to a lecture and listen and leave, the lecturer hardly knows you exist.

Try talking to random people you sit by in your lectures. It's scary, but everyone else is probably as scared as you and will be thankful for someone to talk to

Lmao you sound just like me. ^^; I'minlastyearthankgod.

But yeah sometimes you just have to take a bit of a leap with people and try striking up conversation. I know how you feel but it'll be worth it. ^^

Awwww *hugs*

The lecturer won't know you exist, that's true, but you should have a tutor or advisor or someone that you can go to for help. They should know you exist, even if the lecturer doesn't

There are lots of people, there's bound to be someone who's your type of person. Be bold. Maybe join a society (be it sports, art or just the anime society). You're more likely to find likeminded people that way.

The two best friends I've made so far is a guy from the anime society who's also on my course, and the sweetest Bangladeshi Muslim girl across the hall.

The girl across the hall was scared and worried, and concerned she didn't have anything to decorate her room with. So I offered to help her decorate =)
Try little things like that. If you show you care about people, they'll care about you!

I hope things start to look up soon!

Aaaah thanks everyone! I do try talking to people, they look absolutely terrified that someone should actually make conversation with them! Also I don't live on campus or house share with anyone so I don't know anyone in dorms and stuff >_<

I *am* living in halls and having the same problem
My flatmates are all nice, but I just don't think we're all that alike. I don't see them becoming future best friends. So I was hoping for course or society friends. Don't seem to have had much luck with course, but first society meeting I went to last night I met someone and we ended up going for a drink. Going to a pub quiz tonight as well

So yeah, just talk to different people until you find someone you can actually hold a conversation with
I find that's the problem. Once you've got past the initial 'what's your name, what you studying, where you staying' there's nothing really to say

I'm no good at just going up and speaking to people. I'll talk to them if they talk to me, but I won't make the first move
But if you're at a society and look lonely, someone will come and talk to you. Usually the people running the thing, and if you're lucky they'll push you towards someone else looking lonely (which is what happened to me =p)

So yes, societies are the way to go!!
Because you'll find you actually have things in common with them

My first week at uni has been ok. It slowly got better as I got more used to it. I miss having friends, but through societies (anime on thursday! xD) I'm hoping to rectify that
And my roommate doesn't think I'm totally crazy for cosplaying so I'm doing well =p
