The Leaving-For-Uni Thread!
So it's that time of year 8D we've flipped the hell out over results day and now I'm sure I'm not the only person who's packing up their sewing machine and trekking off across the country!

How is everyone handling their cosplay habits at university? I'm attempting the terrifying endeavour of trying to make it sound cool and not weird to the new friends I plan to make. If I can get one new person to do it by the time I finish uni I'll have achieved my purpose!

And I guess above all, where are we going and what are we studying? I'm leaving London and going to Maidstone in Kent to study Graphic Design. Moving out in less than two weeks now D: !

I'm moving to London from around Liverpool area

I have the same worries, but hopefully London being the size it is I should be able to find some cosplayers somewhere =p
I would like to find some cosplayers within my flat/accommodation/course/uni in general though, that'd be nice
And I'm hoping I don't have to share a room, I have had details about my accommodation yet. I can see a room mate not wanting me sewing all the time

Shall just have to wait, see and hope =]

If I'm honest about it I'm not happy at all! I don't care what people think of me for cosplaying but I am bothered that I will be paying £106 a week for what is basically a bedsit with a shared kitchen etc. which will leave me £11 to live on per week! Ridiculous, sooner I'm out of there the better!

I'm moving from Wirral to Chester (not a great distance...) and I'm not at all worried about cosplay.

I'm moving into a house with two people who already know all about my cosplaying. I'm really into making weapon props, so they keep joking that they're going to come home and find a new rocket launcher or a spear or two lieing round... =P

They're both geeks too though so they didn't find it at all weird when they found out about my cosplaying. They just accepted it as part of being a geek anyway XD

I'm coming from the middle of Belgium to go to Cardiff...a bit of a way, but not too bad.

As far as I know, the anime society borrows the sewing room for making cosplay together but I'll be bringing my own machine too. I'm studying Japanese and Spanish, and most of the others in my Japanese course chose it because of anime so I'm sure I'll find a fellow cosplayer or two in my class =3

I'm kind of worried about where I'm going to keep my costumes, but I'll get to that when the time comes xP

I'm just dreading the work load being to much
meaning I can't keep up with my planned list for October XDXD;;

I'm just about to start my 3rd year at university but thought I could reassure you guys that if it means enough to you it's perfectly possible to keep up the cosplay at university. In fact, I didn't start cosplaying till my first year here! Before I started uni I barely knew anyone who was into anime let alone cosplay. I find that people at university are generally a lot more accepting of strange hobbies than they are at sixth form or high school.

(p.s: I am slightly regretting my decision to try and make 2 costumes for next expo at the same time as researching my dissertation and working on a summer project though lol! You've got to learn to balance things!)

Just thought I'd add my own reassurances (finished uni a couple years ago) You can have pretty much any hobby at Uni and there will probably be a club/society for it there and if not you can start them fairly easily with a surprising amount of success. If you don't want to go that far rest assured people will accept your cosplaying and I'd put money on you getting at least a few people to try cosplaying over your time there, if only for a laugh.

I got into cosplay at university. I found people pretty accepting even if they thought it was weird. One thing I would say, be careful you don't become your accommodation's sewing minion! I was in high demand for costume parties and for taking up dresses!

Maybe it would be useful to put on which uni's everyone is going to / is at. That way we may be able to point you in the right direction as far as societies / cosplay groups are concerned.

I'm going into my 2nd year at University of the arts London. we have a good anime/manga/cosplay/games society going, but there is lots and lots of cosplay activities going on quire regulary in London.

I will say that I found living in halls to be difficult because there was no-one else living there that was in to cosplay. (Most thought I was weird...) Also the area of London I lived in was not a good area to be walking around in cosplay in (Whitechapel) I was attacked a couple of times because of this (and apparently because I was a "white whore". I made some of the closest friends I have ever had through the Manga/cosplay/ etc society and would reconmend joining one to anyone.

Student finance is pretty ridiculous isn't it. Thank god my parents are paying my rent, since my student loan actually isn't enough to cover it.

With regards to what everyone's said about cosplay, it's nice to hear fellow students have been so accepting, and even hear from some people who've been got into it by other students at university C: There is hope yet!

Awww man, I forgot about the price hike a few years back, that sucks. When I was there standard tuition fees jumped from about 1.5K to 3.5K for younger students and the maintenance loan was enough for rent and to live off, albeit frugally.

Well I started uni a few weeks ago. Moved to London from sweden xP

It sure is annoying having barley any money for video games and bars, considering all my money go to food and stuff for school -.-

Oh well, hopefully I'll make one hell of a graphic designer

Im off to The university of Sussex from Worcester so not many visits home for me, It would be nice to find some more cosplayers but from the looks off things the anime and manga society there is no longer active, so its going to be a bit of a struggle.

I've been at York uni for a year studying maths. As far as meeting cosplayers goes, I met one on the first night who was part of my college, and it turns out one of the girls downstairs in my block cosplays. Plus there's anime society and plenty of them cosplay 8D None of my friends judge me for my hobby, but it may be a good idea to get to know people quite well before springing it on them XD

I don't tend to get much time for sewing when I'm actually at uni since maths is a pretty tough workload, but I make up for it by sewing like mad in the holidays XD

My university's anime manga society was pretty inactive when I started too. However, a couple of friends and I have gradually taken over this year and we're starting to make it a bit more interesting. If the club at your uni is no longer active I'd recommend finding a couple of new friends to help you start it all over again! Our club may be small but I've met some great people through it and if it works out it's worth the effort.

You will find some cosplayers there: That's where I'm off to! ^__^

I'm starting my second year! I managed cosplay alright last year but now I have to pay for bills (I'm now in a flat rather than halls) I'll have less for cosplay :/ and with all the things I'm planning (plus as soon as I'm back, I need to buy LOADS of material for october) I can see myself living on soup and beans for weeks xD

I'm doing GAME (Games and Multimedia Environments) and also slightly dreading it. The past 2 courses I wanted shut down =/

Thankfully there are quite a few fabric shops in brighton and there's also a comic book store with a decent manga selection (far better than waterstones and stuff) and there's also a shop which sells anime stuff and some lolita type dresses at the back but I haven't been in there much so I dunno how good it is.

but yus, Brighton is very cosplayer friendly; you can wear all kinds of weird stuff around and nobody will really care and it's really easy to get there and back from Sussex uni, about an hour walk with no hills and a very regular bus service in and out which takes about 20 mins. right now I live about a 20 minute walk from sussex uni and I'm always in and out of brighton ^^

Sounds good! Just got to not try and blow out my entire finace stuff now on material Anyways hope to see you in 28 days, be nice to know a fellow crazy

I'm about to start my 2nd Foundation Degree and I'm freaking out about starting. I hate it. I'm terrified that people will find me weird because I like manga/cosplaying

Plus all my student finance got turned down because it's my 2nd course of the same level T_T My dad is paying for it but now I'm going to have to get my first part time job and now I'm worrying that I won't have time to do my uni work let alone anything else T___T

My worries just snowball D:

I'm going into my Second Year so I'm heading back up North to Stoke/Staffordshire area and just wanted to reassure all students.
DO NOT WORRY

Student finance is highly useful, and the clubs/societys at your uni will be there ^^ (or if they're not then I'm sure you can grab any friends and build it up into a mini empire and take over your uni's!!)

Yep! Do you know which halls you're staying in yet? Apparently we get notified midway through september but wondering if it's different for you living further away and stuff ^^

Also I'll be happy to restart the anime and manga society if the other one is dead!
