Cosplay 'psychology'(?)
Heya guys - I'm in the process of starting to write an important essay for my course discussing the nature of why it is people choose to cosplay? The paper needs to include some 'public' opinion so I thought what better place to ask? ^_~
Regardless on how small or large the answer, it would be really helpful and I'll be so grateful if some of you could take a moment of your time to answer

"Why is it we cosplay? What makes it exciting? what aspires people to do it? etc."

In my personal opinion for example, I believe we cosplay as a means to visually express ourselves for the love that we show for a character and the feature that they're from. We want our feelings to be 'heard' and I believe cosplay is partially used to show that.

What do you guys think? Thanks.

btw I'm sorry if this thread was discussed else where - ^^;;

for some reason i cant think of an answer to that XD i guess i do it as i enjoy both dressing up, and sewing. also its kind of an escape from reality for a brief moment XD

not to sound like a know it all or rude, but if you need a public opinion, are you posting this question elsewhere? only your likely to get a biased opinion asking on a cosplay forum?
hope that dosent sound rude ^^; only having done stupid amounts of primary research and the like, you need to have a fair mixture of ...subjects? XD

hope that makes sense xx

Yeah that does make sense =b that's fine ^^ By 'public' (Sorry I'm a bad writer - shoulda specified ^^; I meant that I needed cosplayer opinions for the paper as well as non cosplayers (which I have been gathering elsewhere) ^_~ - I've just never heard many views to why cosplayers do it in particular

I think we cosplay as it's our own freedom of expression and work of art.

Personally, I cosplay because I want to see what it would be like to be in their clothes, and act as they would, it's more than just playing a game, finishing it, and forgetting about it after a few years.

Maybe we just want to enjoy ourselves as the characters face-to-face, instead of just sitting in a room together all playing on a console each.

I hope this makes sense.

I've always had many hobbies and interests but never one main one and that always really annoyed me. There was never any single one thing that I loved above others.
It turns out cosplay was what I was missing =]

I love it because I love sewing, have done since I was little (despite that being simple cross-stitch and the like).
It's also a great way to meet new people, make new friends and have lots of fun. I only really like to cosplay in groups, so that's a major reason for me.

Also, I'm slightly weird in that I like both sciencey stuffs and artsy stuffs.
I mostly study science subjects and am about to start an astrophysics degree, but I don't want the arts side to disappear from my life completely. Cosplay allows me to have a creative outlet (I just wish it didn't cost so damn much xD)

Edit: Yeah so, to me it's actually more about making the costume rather than being the character (though I love that too, and meeting the people)
I'd be quite happy mainly doing commissions for people and not making much for myself, but I think people would want to see more examples of work before I do that (one day though, one day I would love to be a commissioner)

Not sure if this is too late to help with your research but the reason I started Cosplaying was a combination of two loves of mine.

Computer Games & Costuming

I've learnt so much over the past two years I've been cosplaying and it's pretty much all from my own research alongside hints and tips from fellow cosplayers. I cosplay to learn new seamstry, woodwork and all round creative skills and to enjoy the madness that occurs whenever me and the friends I've made via cosplay are all together ^.^

yayz and all
awesome topic to essay on =D

well, there are a variety of reasons and everyone has their own. They could do it because they like the attention it attracts, or maybe they want to show off their talents to like minded people. Some do it because they love the character/source of the costume and this is the most powerful way they can express that. It could be that its simply an extra reason outside of fancy dress parties and halloween etc. for them to dress up and have uber amounts of fun with other nutters XD

I do it because I love the atmosphere and freedom, no judging and being surrounded by like minded people. Plus getting to have some pics posed with some EPIC cosplayers is always good! =p

sorry, that sounds like an essay kinda already *palms forehead* well I hope it helped! good luck!

What inspired me to cosplay is all the creativeness that is related. They include sewing, modelling, propwork, photography and jewellery making. When I first saw images on the internet when I was 12 years old I knew immediately that I wanted to give it a try. Although there is so much work to it, many cosplayers expressed so much love for making and showing off their creations.

I see cosplay as a great boost in confidence, whether its making something or meeting people. It is a good way to express the 'you can do it if you really try' saying as I hear alot about 'this is the first time I made one of these' or 'I am proud of my first cosplay as this is the first time I have done a major sewing project'.

We all have to start somewhere and it is a good learning experience outside uni for me. There will certainly be alot of blood, sweat and tears for many of my projects as I tend to put alot of work in my projects. Some things may go right, some may go wrong and there will be lots of stress to it. Its wonderful seeing how we progress over the years. Also it is lots of fun trying out clothing that I rarely wear in real life. That allows me to experiment with styles.

As for wearing costumes, one of the absolute best things for me is seeing other congoers' looks of happiness while seeing a character they love! Seeing them happy make me happy This gets enhanced when we are talking a character from a series that is rarely cosplayed/not known much. I have made some cool friends as a result of this.

Continuing on about friends, cosplay tends to make me more confidant in social situations. Many of the things that I am less confident with in real life tends to be forgotten/less noticeable.

I love getting into character. That is maybe one of the best aspects for me, and somehow makes any cosplay looks cooler and more memorable (as long as its not too overdone).

There's a lot of reasons why people cosplay XD The main reason for most being to show off their sewing skills and acting talents. It's a character to impersonate. For others, it's simply for attention and hits. Like the people who take close ups of trying to look sexy or cute. Not really to show off a cosplay or their acting. And for others, it's on a more social level so people can meet others with common interests.

When I was in college, there weren't a great deal of people who liked cosplay or anime, so I found it difficult to make newer friends. Luckily the nerds were more understanding! X'D It's just really awkrard how people just find cosplayers a little too strange. They think it's abnormal, when really, cosplay is an art in itself ^^

I don't know if it will be relevant to your essay but I believe that cosplay is not only a way for people to express themselves but a way to escape reality...almost like people that play a lot of video games ya know?...I dunno if that even makes sense XDD

My two biggest hobbies are sewing and gaming. Cosplay's just a happy combination of the two of them. I mean, I get to make stuff that looks like stuff from video games? Awesome.

I've gotten more into cosplay over the last few years as I've met some really nice people through it. vOv

I first wanted to do it just to be someone different for the day, and I still do, its great getting to be someone else, but its also awesome to create something yourself to do with something you love

Well I havent been into cosplay long but I have wanted to for some time...I love gaming and the characters and being able to show that is amazing and the feeling I get when Im in an outfit...I forget about the bad things and I enjoy myself and I have made some amazing friends.

Cosplay, to me, is a means to escape from the real world just for a little while and meeting people ^_^ Also I get so much pride when I have made something as sometimes I feel like I cant so its a great feeling...

Sorry if none of this makes sense...its hard for me to describe it ^_^

The odd thing is, I was contemplating on using cosplay/dressing up as a topic to write about in psychology once (until I found out my project was on aggression...so dissapoint)

I personally cosplay because its fun! Planning costumes and how I would make them lets me practise being creative, and I get a sense of achievement when I finish ^^

haa, it was just like "oh wow there's this anime thing in london and they dress up as different characters, its called cosplay" "I'm so doing that"

I still have that mentality now, it's just I also make more parts of it too cos that's fun as well ^^ no psychology from me, just following my instinctZ
