Drop in sales? Have they thought that this may be more to do with the recession and the lack of fans expendable income? Fans have always found ways to circulate translated manga. This is just a way for the companies to scrape back their profit margins!

This argument's a bit tired now, but it's still not changed much. The fact is that manga scanlations were always illegal, and the publishers of said titles have every right to send cease and desist orders to any site hosting scans.

I admit that I read scans, however I do this to keep up with the manga I love - I'd have hated to have done an FMA cosplay only for someone to dump spoilers on me while that was still running. I justify it by buying the official translation as soon as it becomes available here. I own all 23 graphic novels of FMA that are out in the UK right now, and the same goes for series such as Naruto.

When it comes to something like One Piece, where there are over 50 volumes and I have neither a deep enough wallet nor enough free time to invest in the series, I just plain never start reading.

Paying for manga is a way of showing your gratitude to the original author and helps the publishers find even more awesome comics to throw our way. I love it when pirates wonder why their favourite series aren't getting official translations when they're not buying other series they like, because they already read them online.

The whole move makes sense to me. Artists and their publishers don't expect to put their content out for free. If you wanna read it, pay for it. While it's true piracy can never truly be killed and scans will always be avaialble somewhere, at least try and have some moral decency and see the other side of the coin.

I haven't really read the other posts, just scanned through.
But I think that manga shouldn't be online. There's several reasons, so this'll probably turn into a rant... So you've been warned...
Just because then the manga artist isn't getting any money out of it but thousands of people can view it and all the time and effort put into the making of it it seems worthless if you're not gonna profit, with people reading online instead of going and buying it online or from a comic store with a manga section, WH smiths, Waterstones, hey, even ASDA-entertainment sells Death Note manga. I could see why people would read online if it was hard to get a hold of in countries outside Japan etc. But it isn't really. Also, if noone's buying the manga from the comic stores etc, companies will stop shipping manga to certain places where there isn't enough interest. Same with anime, fair enough watching a couple episodes online or whatever, otherwiseyou wouldn't know if the anime was for you, to your tastes. But after testing if you like it, I feel you should buy it, to support the creators etc... Also you can start a collection etc, with all your favourite anime/manga. ^^!
Feel free to disagree with me etc. :] Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I can see why people do watch and read online, manga can be expensive etc... But it's worth it to purchase the manga etc. That's all really. Rant over. :]
