There is a Reference button -_-'
Right ive been talking with a fair few people and they agree i should bring this up.

Over time i have noticed people putting up cosplay reference pics and them forgetting to press reference button.
I can let it go if its just a one off picture but if its like 3-4 at the same time and you keep missing the button it gets a little silly!!

Personally what i want to see on the front page is progress shots of what people have been working on, not what people are supposed to achieve -_-.

(Here comes the bitch moment) Personally i am thinking people who forget to press that button are just looking for a comment on that cosplay which is stupid because its likely they think "the more comments the more superior my cosplay is" its not like that at all ¬¬ you do your cosplay because its fun! and you want to do that character!

I admit i have missed the button once or twice before but as soon as i notice i have i delete the picture and upload it pressing the button.

I mean is really pressing that TINY BUTTON so hard to do?

Completely agree with this - it's kinda annoying when you put up progress of something you're pleased with and then get whacked off the front page by a load of references.

I want to see progress from people in the photos section not references! If I wanted to see references of something I'd go to google =_=

27 Jul 2010 - 17:4737143
I agree bro

i mean weve all been guilty on accident before, but when theres 3 -4 ref pics un ticked then thats blatenly trying to show off, and it is upsetting that i pushes peoples progress off the front page, i know some of the mods are around to make them ref ticked sometimes, but there not around always so peoples hard earned work get kicked by pics which really does piss me off quite a bit.

theres no way you can say you forgot to hit it, because if thats the excuse people are gonna use maybe the mods should apply it in big bold capitals!

27 Jul 2010 - 17:5237144
Gawd, I know what you're saying.
Of course, I'm guilt of missing the button on the occasion, I forget about its existance from time to time before panicing and deleting the ref and ticking the box when re uploading.
Its like.. Yeah! >>;; (I'm sorry, I don't make sense atall)
I scroll down there to see work in progress or new pictures, not references oTL

It might be worth asking a mod to move this over to the Site Feedback thread, it's more likely that a member of staff will look at it and then there's a better chance for them to maybe do something about it

But yeah, it is becoming a problem, it used to be the occasional ref pic here and there and recently the numbers have quadrupled...

Tell me about it.

Are you guys aware that for EVERY PHOTO added to the site, a moderator has to approve it? That means we can come on at the end of the day, find 64 photos to go through.

Now imagine half of those are reference pictures that you've then got to switch over to references.

It's only recently that I realised people aren't aware that every photo is moderated...LOL

Those photos that appear in the live feed are caught by us, but obviously by then it's already cluttered the feed.

Maybe making the font really big on the reference art checkbox might help? I don't doubt that sometimes people deliberately ignore it, but if it's massive then there's less chance of accidentally forgetting.

27 Jul 2010 - 19:1037151
I think making the reference picture box in a bigger font, also I think if you placed it between the title and the photo uploader, people might notice it more.

Where it's placed now can be a bit easy to overlook, since not everyone writes a description, if you were to place it like how I mentioned above, it follows a path that everyone will take anyways (since you cannot upload a photo without a title or the uploader) ^^

What?! Seriously? How many mods are there? O_o How can you guys keep track of the site 24/7? I'm shocked.

Not to create even MORE work for Perrin, but perhaps if we had a feature that was like "Mark as Reference", and it took 3 individual people's clicks to change the image to a reference picture, that could work?

But yeah, I agree. It's really annoying when you upload some progress pictures and it gets instantly bumped off the main page by someone uploading loads of reference pictures that aren't marked as reference. I've been really close to leaving comments on people's costumes before, reminding them to change the image to a reference XD

5 technically but Perrin isn't on day-to-day and I'm not on as often as I'd like (I'm getting better!) Meaning Amy-Lou and Sean and the ever-amazing-nert are the main three trawling through every single photo correcting them. So yes, you can imagine this can get on our nerves too when people do it repeatedly!

For the most part the images are corrected fairly quickly, so having a collective 'voting' for marking as reference wouldn't really solve the issue.

We'll look into changing the order as that might bring a bit more notice to it, it's a good suggestion. However regarding the size/colour etc, I think even if we make it bright red size 20 scrolling text with flashing lights, the same offenders would just ignore it.

In the long run if it becomes more and more of a problem we may have to consider not allowing reference images, or dealing with them in a different way.

Possibly a separate section for the reference pictures to be uploaded to? Rather like the icon section we have at the moment on a costume page.

It would then be treated as a separate gallery above the costume gallery and would not have the photos join the main photo gallery so people wouldn't have to see it.

I personally would not like references removed full stop from cosplay island as from a makers point of view I like my costumes to be accessible to those who haven't watched the series. From a fan point of view I like to see what a costume is supposed to look like as I'm not too great on series knowledge myself. I can appreciate a costume more if I know how accurate it is.

Oh I completely agree with you, it's the reason why we wanted them in the first place!

At the moment we're very open with how people use their picture slots, it can be full of reference images if they want - if we changed it similar to the icon setup we'd limit it. So even then we'd be cutting back on people's freedom.

We'll check out swapping things around and seeing if that makes a difference, and take it from there if necessary. Removing them completely is definitely a last resort

Hey I chip in when I can too

It's not difficult to do, there's just a lot of it and it keeps coming! And when people have live action images as references or their photos are particularly plastered with overlays/photoshopping and we have to go take a closer look to see what the story is before marking it one way or the other..

I'd think having a dropdown box with Reference/Progress/Finished and the default being blank and making it a mandatory box would do it, it's easy to claim you missed a checkbox than oops I repeatedly picked the wrong item from a dropdown menu

I've no idea what you are on about, I definitely did not forget to mention you in my first post. Of course not dear, your eyes are just tired

But actually, you may be onto something with the drop down method!

I think thats a great idea! have it go "please fill in all mandatory fields" if it's not done.

If you wish to be technical, progress photos ought to be put into the journal so that they don't show up on the front page, since my own preference is to only show the costume in full glory on the front page.
However, that's another argument for another day (actually it's an argument that's already had its day).

The issue with that is that if you're like me and added pretty much everyone you know at conventions if someone updates their journal 30 mins later they're off the friends update list, and you'll never know they even put up a journal entry.

The watch list may combat this, but you have to add in the fact that people are lazy and rarely look at the information section of a costume, let alone the journal.

That problem with "Friends Update" pretty much also applies to photo adds (which is less forgiving since it only shows the latest 3 photos) and if people are too lazy to click on a different section of a person's costume profile, then I can't see them skimming tediously through the updated photos section.

Oh I DID forget to mention that I do agree with the main point of opening post.

Or even just a bit on the image upload bit that says "Is this a reference pic?" with two radio buttons, yes and no. Then make it mandatory.

Fair dooze.
In that case then, cosplayers should be able to upload multiple images with the journal entry, because some people may have worked on multiple items at once and can only show one image per journal and they may want a few more images to show what else they have been working on. Of course thats for progress images, but like anyone will stick to it (not fighting with that bit, just stating the truth )

Why not have the reference checkbox ticked by default, therefore unless people choose to clear the box those images won't show up on the front page. After all, if a non reference image gets checked by mistake that's not an issue for anyone nor is it cluttering up the front page.
