Painting shoes/boots
For my Rikku cosplay i need white platform(ish) boots/shoes that im gonna modify..
however, these boots have to have a BLACK sole, which im finding pretty hard to track down any that arent horribly over priced or completely unsuitable.
There are plenty off all black/all white boots available. So i was thinking i could cut paint the main part of the boot white leaving the sole black.
Not sure what paint to use. Ive used model paint/enamal on a leather jacket before and that seemed to withstand being flexed well and didnt crack. Anyone painted boots before? what did you use?

Dylon make a special leather shoe paint which works rather well. It comes in a range of colours too. It can sometimes look a bit shinier than normal leather, but if applied right doesn't crack or split.

Sorry to jump in on this thread Daisy but I too am having problems with painting leather/pleather.

I have used Plasti-kote spray for part of my Harley Quinn cosplay for her boots and it's stayed quite well.

Only problem is that once I applied the spray to the pleather it just stayed tacky and never properly dried =(

Maybee try some halfords car body paint, i stupidly sprayed some silver on my beutifull black boots by mistake when working on my halo costume... damn stuff will not come off

its not a cheap option and probably not going to work at all.... but hey its an idea for you... no success without trial! good luck.

Magix Spray Dye for Leather and Vinyl. I buy mine from ebay and it comes in a range of colours. It's so easy to spray on, fast to dry and doesn't leave any streaks if you use it correctly. I used it recently on the boots for Jill Valentine and it's the best I've used so far.

for my simon boots i just used plain acryllic paint on the leather, just gave it a few coats and it stayed fine, withstands flex quite a lot and it only started coming off because it was raining on the day xD;

I used acrylic spray on the majority of my suit, and on some of miruru's gundam Pilot Suit (pleather)
it held quite well and didn't flake when bent on the pleather (sprayed a 30cm strip with matt black, waited 5 minutes to dry, then rolled up the strip without any flaking)

you can buy a 500ml can from Clas Ohlson for about 4 quid

http://www.clasohlson.co.uk/Product/Product.aspx?id=137348447

as you can see, they do only really do black (gloss/matt), white (gloss/matt), primer and varnish.

If you don't have one near you, then I'd advise the same as keir, going for a halfords car spray. they're a bit more expensive, but get the job done.

side note, I sprayed the soles of my Gundam feet with the gloss black and none of the paint came off at all throughout the whole day.

My Green Lantern Jacket on my costumes was painted using regular Green aerosol spray and it sticks really well and lasted quite a long time before cracking, if its a costume that your only wearing once I would say go for spray but if not then I would say Dylon leather polish but it takes a while to get an even coat.

I used Plasti-kote lawn green spray for my boots for my Roronoa zoro costume. One of them had kept quite well, whereas the other most of the paint has cracked off where the shoe bends when I walk. I wouldn't reccomend using this as each time i wear them now i have to re-spray them ¬_¬

If you are going to use Plasti-kote spray, don't spray the boots when it is cold outside. The temperature affects how the paint stays... hence one boot kept better than the other. Warm temperatures = good for spraying stuff ^_^

Hope this helped

I got some white boots with black soles/heels from eBay once... similar to these but a thicker sole and with heel, so the black was obvious. That seller doesn't seem to be on ebay anymore though.

Anyway, if it's a choice of getting black boots to paint white or getting white boots to paint black, maybe the latter is better. It means that if it gets scratched off on the day, you can just fill it with a black sharpie! If it's the other way around you might have to repair with tippex instead.

Hmm yeah, i wasnt keen on the idea of painting the sole at first since i didnt know how well it would withstand the wear.. seems like a better option now you've mentioned that

i want them to look chunky ish like this ^^
they would be perfect really - i would make a cover for the rest to make it into a full boot..rather than a shoe.
But theres no way im pay 20quid postage!
