Ayacon report in Sunday Telegraph today
well, it's a report. you can tell the journalist had no idea what was going on, and she more than misquothed a few people (myself included, shelfstacker?)

worth a read i guess, we're getting mainstream attention (even if it is 9 months since aya)

it does seem a bit wierd to talk about aya now XD. was this Someone who attended Aya then. ( i'm going to the shops in a minute so i'll pick it up to have a read)

Is getting attention in the likes of the Telegraph a good thing? :S

I'd be interested in reading this too, but I can't quite be bothered to go buy the Telegraph.

One thing, though: is it a good report or a bad report? d:

it's very out of context. the reporter paints me as " a shelf stacker" when in reality i told her that i was working at a supermarket as a stop gap while i job hunted after finishing university

scanner's started behaving, i'll post up caps when i've edited them

soooo... is it a good report or a bad report? Painting a person out of context is one thing. Painting the entire community out of context is quite another XD

Well, as long as it's not negative- usually they like to turn it to hentai and blame us for the decline and fall of society.

When one of the first thing I read was 'Final Fantasy Crisis Call' it was pretty obvious this was going to be a bad article.

Seems very harsh saying 'He is in the worst shape of any man I have ever seen dressed as a teddy' <-- And just before that shows they didn't bother to research anything after being at the con considering the big clue words were 'Soul Society' leading to Bleach, fair enough there's games of it too but still annoying.

Sigh. Media fails.

I was thinking that too. the part about kon seemed just rude. I know that might be just my intepretation, but it did seem to be a bit like their mind was already made up about cosplay before the article was wrote

My favorite bits are:

Interviewing Karen:

Isn't your hobby a bit strange? I ask? She looks at me. 'Anything that isn't utilitarian is weird for a biological organism'

Upon seeing Timber as Pierre:

So I approach a man dressed as a chef. His face is painted bright green like broccoli. I am thinking that any man as exhibitionist as this will leap on a journalist, but no. He mumbles that he will not be interviewed without other people in his 'group'. So he calls over a man called Tab

Upon meeting me:

Tab has a pale, delicate face.

XD XD

More thinking Timber is a weirdo:

Tab explains that the chef, who is still completely silent- he doesn't say a word to me- is called Pierre the French Goblin Chef. 'They bought him at the goblin slave market,' he says, adding, 'it's a terrible thing to sell a goblin with a skin disease.' Pierre the French Goblin Chef has a skin disease? 'Yes' Tab says, 'goblins are actually blue.

Xae is sitting near me as we are interviewed:

He turns to a boy beside him. He is dressed as some kind of alien.

LOL Xae is in his 30's and was in his Bri costume from appleseed. She then calls him robocop

I am now holding Robocop's hand

Much lols for all.

-Tab

Wow. I don't know what to make of this but I'm just glad I avoid the media and interviews now when I attend conventions.

Uh... hm... not really sure what to make of it really.

She's obviously totally out of her depth, these kind of articles would be better written by someone who acually understands the genre and hobby.

Its not exactly tarnishing the cosplay community, but she seems to be making fun of cosplayers and the people who enjoy it, which I don't like.

Hmm...

I do find the article pretty biased anyway.......and how the media just likes to change words about its really not far........but im just glad that here the cosplay community is growning and that people start to understand why people cosplay and even start getting involved in it themselves ^^

But everyone is entiled to their opinion i guess

this.

it's sort of like it was written by a chav who understood the concepts of libel and defamation. they didn't want to get in trouble, but they wanted to have a stab at the same time because they didn't relate to the goings on

it mentions expo at the bottom. Are they going?

they usually do, not for the event goers, but for the stars.

imo, we should try to persuade a more independent "free thinking" paper to go to ame.

It sounded rather insulting to me but then I suppose that's how most people think without any prior experience of cosplayers? =/

Fffffff....

I think the best thing here to do is to not take it personally...But thats kinda hard to do when it's concerning a hobby that is important to us!

I was reading that whole thing like 'O___O;;'

Sure it's spreading the word...but like...if I told someone that I'm a cosplayer and they only had that article as a reference I can already imagine the kind of reaction I would get. :/

09 May 2010 - 15:4631532
basically, most external sources don't understand the idea that we do this sort of thing a few times a year, not every day.

she essentially painted me like i throw on my suits when i get home from a busy day shelf stacking. like hell do i. i'd be dead by now.

i think the best thing to bear in mind is that they've taken 9 months to vomit up 4 pages of misquotes, inaccuracies and borderline insults. oh, and look... it's a 'tory bias paper. big surprise.

I guess this is just one of the problems you get with something like cosplay getting more famous. it is quite a geeky hobby, but articles like that just don't get across how much time and effort people actualy put into the costumes. it's not like we are cosplaying to be wierd. We do it because we like the character, the costume or the challenge of making it. This is why I don't really like papers or tv reporting on cosplay ( although the calender thought bubble review wasn't too bad)

To be fair, its a hobby that most people just don't "get". So its no surprise that when someone did a report on it (regardless on whether they gather information prior or not) it will probably still be done in a way like this. Its a weird hobby, and for people who aren't into it of course they're going to think that guys dressed as girls, girls dressed as guys, people dressed in fursuits or what-have-you is pretty damn high on the Weird-o-meter.

Its like how some of us (or maybe its just me) doesn't "get" how people can be obsessed with football. I mean seriously? Its a bunch of guys kicking a ball around for an hour and a half? Big whoop?

Its an outsider's view of something they don't entirely understand and whether or not you do research into it or not, they're probably still not going to understand it. Besides, I think to all of us the hobby means something different anyway, so its not like they can print all the different reasons as to why we cosplay in one article.

Oh and Xae, really, don't take it personally. Anyone who works in a conveniance store is going to automatically be considered to be a 'shelf-stacker'.
