So, two of my imminent cosplays involve working with pigtails - I already posted a thread for help with one wig & got a lot of helpful tips back! However, I lack confidence in my ability to pull off all this weft & weaving business involved in parting a wig!! & am currenlty reluctant in getting something comissioned due to finances!

Point of this thread is....I've heard here and there that cosworx wigs are actually so thick that when you part them down the middle into pigtails....it actualy doesn't show any netting, so you can get away with doing partings without adding any extra fibre? I've never bought a wig off cosworx, so was wondering if anyone who has, could confirm - or not as the case may be if this is true? It would save me money as I'd hate to dish out 40 + odd quid for a wig and still need to add to it !!

I haven't used their wigs before, but how imminent is your cosplay? Lots of people say that Cosworx wigs take 2-4 weeks to arrive, so if you need them soon Cosworx is probably out of the question...

Not too imminent - I need them both by Amecon 2010 ideally, so I still have a tiny marge if post all goes well x3!!

Honestly cosworx wigs, while thicker than any other seller I know of, are definitely not thick enough to just part like that. You might be able to manage it with a thick zigzag parting on something like Ivy but I would still buy back up wefts just in case.

There are a few back parting wigs on ebay sometimes but they're mostly blonde so you'd need to dye them if you needed another colour.

The other option if you're willing to risk it is to buy from amphigory through katie bair. I will warn you though, be prepared for a wait of 1.5 to 2 months at least. The worst wait I've had is 6 months because her order was cancelled and she didn't notice until 4 months later. She's also refusing to take paypal now and only money orders sent through the post so that will slow down ordering times too as well as come with the risk of it getting lost in the post.
I would really only use her as a final back up option if you can find nothing else.

It depends on the wig. Only some of them are thick enough to do that with. In my experience, the punky wigs are the best for thickness, which we found from using it as a Sora wig.

Your other option is to get a short base wig and buy some extensions of the same colour that can be used as pigtails? I don't know if this would work for that style but, while you'll have hair down, it's a pretty effective technique and looks better than all that nasty netting.

Even if it's very thick I'm guessing there will still be a line where you do the parting and unless it's got a skin top there the weft will still show...?

Which brings me to the question: are "full skin top" wigs any good? I'm guessing the skin would be a bit stretchy and it should still fit any size head, and it might be breatheable too, but do they end up feeling too snug and uncomfy after a long day at a summer con?

Full skin tops do look nice but they do lack the ability to stretch and shape to the wearers head so getting a wig with the right fit is quite important with them. They do give the fibres much more volume however and make side parting so much easier.
The one thing I don't like about full skin tops however is the construction of the front when there's a fringe. The weft is sewn right along the edge so unless its left unstyled it can look really odd and rather patchy at the front.

With the punky wigs unless you mean the new punk, its really no better for back parting. Its designed exactly the same way as the other wigs so you get the same problem of netting showing at the back. The only difference really is that the fibres are more coarse and fluffy like the new punk and the top of the cap is wefted the same. The new punk however is good for stubby tails (eg yotsuba) but obviously not for long tails unless you want to get extensions in which case I would just get a regular short wig that comes with extensions.

Awwww thanks to all of you - you've really been very helpful! In all honesty I thought this cosworx myth was too good to be true!! I think I'm going to have to suck it up and learn how to weft & part, there are a few good tutorials out there!!

However I think I'll try my luck buying a short wig and adding extensions to it for the upcoming cosplays as I may not have time to weft, weave and part !! I'll still look up skin caps though ....they could come in handy one day!!

Just to warn you though, if you do get a wig from cosworx, keep an eye on the shipment - Parcelforce had to take my wig through customs and I had to pay an extra £15 to get it. It wasn't cosworx fault, but I felt I should warn you just in case it happens.

As for partings... I'm afraid I'm not sure myself. I needed the wig I got for Yusei's hairstyle XD

Although I've never done styling like this, my experience with cosworx have been good. Two wigs I have bought have been good thick, one short and the other bellow shoulder length. I can say they're good for styling and properly would last to parting into pigtails.

As for posting chargers, I've never had a problem with them. As a UK buyer I expect to wait 2 weeks for stuff from the USA, but the first wig was just about 2weeks (maybe less?) and the second taking nearly 3 weeks. No extra charges have been added to me before either.
So, yeah... I'm saying try them but try cosplay.com forum wigs section. They have a whole post dedicated to showing the wigs in action and before styling in as many colours as photos have been posted. Its very handy if your unsure on your wig choice for duribilty, actual style, length and colours.
