Cosplaying Original Design Characters?
Good and Bad points.

Pros:

No matter what you do, it's correct as it's yours

It can promote the story or whatever you made them for

It's highly unlikely that anyone else will do them - indivualised!

I believe it shows creativity without people getting prissy because you've put your own spin on a character

Cons:

Some may not realise it's cosplay as some original characters wear everyday clothing.

Someone might steal your character design/ideas.

I can think of any more cons

The main downpoint that I can see for it is that people are very unlikely to recognise it, and sometimes that can mean that it doesn't draw the attention it should. It's not something I've really done yet, mostly because I'm not someone who's great at designing stuff, but personally I get a big kick out of the creativity original designs can often show.

I'd also like to mention that if you're entering an original character into a judged event where the costume must be of your own making, you should be prepared to provide design sketches/descriptions and/or planning information, as the judges can't judge for accuracy in the same way as a replica costume so you need to give them something else to work off!

It really depends what type of cosplayer you are.

If your doing cosplay as a way to showcase your creative talent then original designs I think I a plus as you can be as creative as you like and not worry about being correct.

If your an impact cosplayer who loves being reckonised for doing a close match of a popular character then original costumes are a negative as they tend not to get the response that perhaps you would prefer.

You can put pockets in your costume without having to hide them in inventive ways.

Sadly I realised this after I had constructed the costumes.

All aboard the failship!

Lol! That is a great plus.

I'm currently pondering how to do that with my costumes to be.

I might board that ship...
