Full Steampunk ahead
I've just found this thread, and I have to say hooray. After years of costume oriented hobbying, I am tentatively moving into cosplay and looking for various niches that suite knackered old reenactors.
Years ago I started in American Civil War reenactment, and the Brave New World of the 19th Cent has long fascinated me. You don't have to invent stuff, what those guys did for real was amazing enough, and if you realy want to go off the wall, look at Victorian speculative fiction and fantasy.
On the subject of costuming and materials, the big advantage of using something like the original fabrics is that it is easier than faking it. Wool tailors much more easily than any substitute, and what you spend on the fabric you save in time. It takes a lot of interlining and stiffening to get the Victorian line and profile right with synthetics. With a good wool coating you don't even have to line it.
The same goes for linen cotton and silk, and if you are making the stuff yourself, your time is worth a lot more than the pennys you save with cheap materials that don't have the look and are harder to work with. OK I'm biased, but I have been reproducing historical costume for years. I have made tons of stuff that I looked at later and wept because it just didn't do.
Personaly one of my favourite characters is H. Rider Haggards Allen Quatermain, not the film character.Though his habit of going into combat minus his trousers makes him a bit of a problem to cosplay. By the way, he was based on a real elephant hunter called Selious, after whom the Selious Scouts in Rhodesia were named.
Anyway, I am running off at the keyboard here, so by by for now, I'll catch you all again later.
Joshua

Ooops
The above was meant to go with the Steampunk thread started by Ryukredapples but with my usual incompetance I've started a new one. If you have the skilles to do so please stick this with the main thread.
