Wierd, whacky, creepy con/expo exp
okay so i've been reading alot on cosplay.com specially the GD forums on creepy con exps and im wondering since the majority of all those cons on that site are mainly US based twas wondering if anyone in the UK/Euro had any weird experiences they'd like to share

I have one that im trying to get rid of my head but its just lingering in my head D'; anyway this was at Oct Expo 09 i've been running around screaming and shouting out "ITS SUPER DYNAMIC COOKING TIME" everytime someone wants a photo of me in my El Fuerte anyway afternoon comes and el fuerte is getting tired from lugging a bag around (plus the screaming and posing for the cameras) so i decide to get some water seeing as the vending machines dont take plastic or notes i opt to go to one of those middle cafe/shops.

kay so while im queuing for my drink of cool cool water this rather large.... rather... not to be rude or anything but unsightly to say the least anikin skywalker (the guy has one califlower ear ><;; behind in the queue, a minute into waiting he starts a convo with me (i dont remember all the details but i do remember im fringing away to a hiding place or trying to find my friends somewhere) anyway he starts going on how theres all these cute girls about and that he wished he could get with some of them and im like in my head "No no no no !!!! shut up shut up shut up! I DONT NEED TO HEAR A PERVY CONVO WITH A FAT GREASY DUDE LIKE YOU!" after i pay i quickly leave to go outside.

its prob not as daunting as some but thats about all i got

P.S. i do truly fear for what you girls have to go through if theres greasy dudes like that about at expo.

I got stopped by a guy once, who without hesitating looked me in the eyes and said "I don't normally do men, but I'd rape you."

I smiled thinking he was just joking but he was completly deadpan. I got the hell out of there.

Does that count?

Some chap in a wheelchair made some sort of weird sarcastic comment about me dressing like a stripper or something at Collectormania London. I can't remember what I said in reply but it wasn't nice. Turns out he was the chap from "Fonejacker" filming some sort of pilot for C4/Hat Trick. Karma eh?

ermm a couple I can think of immediately:

at ayacon on the saturday night I was still in my link costume enjoying a few drinks with my sister and dancing around when some guy comes up firstly says "nice hat" walks away, comes back and says
"can I be your zelda?"

october expo, 12 year old kid stops and asks me for a photo while i'm dressed as cammy I say ok. the kid pinched my ass really hard while the photo was being taken =/ I ran away kind of quickly, turned around to see he was sort've following me.
I was sexually harassed by a minor XD

A friend and I were hanging about at London Expo and this came to talk to us. We had NO IDEA what he was on about, so my friend goes, "Can you come with me to the loos please?"
I go "Yeah, sure" and start to pack away, the guys says buy and we just stand there kinda creeped out.

Nothing major but creeped me out anyway. I was just getting my coat at the end of the Grand Cosplay Ball last week and heard someone call my name. I turned around looking for someone I recognised and instead saw some random guy sitting on the stairs who said to me "You don't know me but I know you..."
I was like "Okay..." and quickly turned around and went in search of my bf lol

Oh dear Leonie, I think we've all been there!

Luckily most people don't recognise me out of costume, it's still sureal to me when a stranger knows me by my cosplay name when I'm not cosplaying. If someone speaks to me and seems a little weird I still try my best to be polite.

I was in the lift at Expo wearing my Galaxy Railways cosplay and after an awkward silence the well dressed business woman next to me asked what was going on. I had to explain it to her in the seconds left before the lift opened again, talk about being put on the spot.

I'm really lucky that most people don't recognise me out of costume so if someone's being a bit weird I can change out of it in the evening and then walk about unnoticed.

I've met a lot of weird people in my time, though working at a dealers stall means you do tend to get more of them than the average person, especially as you can't move away.

I’ve had a couple of freaking weird experience when I walking about in and out of cosplay shame I can’t remember most of them as I kind of just brush them off.

You get use to the strange incounters after awhile. I will try to dig these out from the recess of my brain lol

Ok well one I recall and still to this day have no idea why it happen but it did, was one of the very first times I had worn my Vincent cosplay and having about 6 girl no lie pin me down on the flow and one trying to kiss me “all though she did ask if she could” which I replied no! That was fucking creepy at the time I only really just meet these girls at the same con but now I can laugh about it XD.

This one happened a long time age. Back when I first started to go to recon XD. I was at my local recon in my newly update cloud cosplay sword and everything. I had two guys both holding books come up to me and ask can you sign these book for use for are girlfriends they thing your amazing and they love your movie =S I replayed “you do know this is just a costume right?” the guys replayed “we do yah, but if we get your signature it puts use in good stead with are girlfriends if you not what i mean” I LOLd and signed their books Cloud Strife XXX

Another incident I had happen to me which was more funny that creepy but still pretty weird I had some kid at expo come up to me when I was wearing my Jareth cosplay I love you cosplay man can I have a picture please. So I said occurs you can, and he tuck the picture as I was about to leave he says to me “you really have to watch out for my friend he really hates you!”
I ask him why dose his friend hate me. He said “my friends mum really like the labyrinth movie and name him after Jareth" i laugh pretty hard and ask “was his last name magic dance?” he said it was not funny then reply “well a little bit funny” and smile himself. I thought that would be the last I herd of it but I was wrong. walking past the entrant to expo later that day I heard some kid as I walk past him mutter under his breath Your not the really jareth prick...... #!~£? Swearing lots as he walked away from me.
So I shout back. Are you all right Jareth tell your mum i said high XD the rest of expo look confused by what i had just seid. I just laughed and walked on.

Last one i can remember was walking though Southampton shopping centre and having someone behind me should OMFG its Grayskull this most of been really loud as I heard it though my earphone why playing some really loud EBM I was not even in costume how did they now it was me.
I stop and turned around and sore 2 guys and a girl running out me and glumped me in the shopping centre WTF!
Then the girl said “we should total get a picture” I was total at odd to why they would want one but i was in shock still from the glump i just went with it.

I've had several people in and around London shout my real name and when I enquired how they knew me they replied "You're sjbonnar" but didn't introduce themselves...was rather creepy LOL

At actual cons, I don't think I've had any truly scary experiences. A few were weird but nice. Like after the Steampunk panel at Fuyu there was a girl who had to have her male friend introduce her to me because she was too nervous. Strange, but sweet ^_^

I seem to attract the creepy stalkers >>

2 especially, one who goes to my uni and is in my course which doesn't help. He has a habit of trying to look up my skirts or ask me out or ask if he can rest his head in my lap >> Sometimes he asks, sometimes he just does it if I'm sitting down, just goes and plonks his head right on my lap with me going Bsgihsioushgfwe809rfsdhfsh!
Blegh.

The other worst one is a guy I met in 2008 who happened to be cosplaying from the same series as me and was my character's love interest. He then spent the entirety of the day attached to me, trying to kiss me, touching my bum when we were sitting down. I even said it made me uncomfortable, but it didn't stop him from invading my personal space like crazy and generally asking to go back to my con room and so on. Really, I had just met the guy that day. Since then he seems to find me at every con I go to, regardless of what I'm cosplaying and hangs around being generally off-putting and awkward.

Eventually I told him that he made me feel uncomfortable and I didn't want him hanging around and he seemed to finally understand that. But since then I've been catching him lurking about and generally still watching me and coming over from time to time making everything all very awkward.

Anyway, it seems both haven't bothered all-too-much lately so I'm hoping they both go away. I've had some other instances too, not as bad as either of them though so there's no point talking about them all. Stupid stalkers.

It was during the Thursday of KitaCon. It was fairly late and all my friends were upstairs in one of the rooms while my best friend went back to his room in the Ibis so I was alone on the floor so I hung around near the pooltable with some people I sort of know a little. Some time later a woman from the bar asked what drink I would like because someone was willing to pay for me. I got freaked out because I had no idea who would buy me one so I got down back to the lounge to calm down.

I later returned to the pooltable area and some guy who must have been about 3 times my age came to be and said he liked girls of my type and wanted to buy me a drink. After being asked a dozen times I accepted the offer of being given a drink anyway (im too polite to just walk away ) and because he was American I explained that in the UK some would rather know who is buying them a drink before being given one.

Luckily 2 other congoers saw what happened and obviously noticed how unconfortable I was (im an extreamly nervous person). They allowed be to hang out with them for the rest of the night which was very kind of them

Fellow con goers are your friends in that kind of situation. I recommend people travel in pairs at cons as much as they can, not just for safety if things go bad, but also so it's easy for one of you to pull an excuse if the other one is being talked to and looks uncomfortable.

A quick "I need to go to the loo" works well if you're a girl (as lets face it, most of the creepy people are guys so they can't follow you in there). For guys grabbing your phone as though you've got a text and being like "oh, my mate needs to talk to me for a sec" and wandering off is also good.

If you've had experince like this, atleast you know that you're a kind of popular cosplayer! XD

Well we can all say cosplayers are eccentric but a lot of what's here is below the belt! Scary stuff.

@sjbonnar: Ah, I am guilty of such crimes as asking if a person is <username> and failing to mention myself! Not sure about others but personally I end up either forgetting or thinking it useless. I do worry it weirds people out, I should be more polite. :/

This didn't happen at a con but at a cosplay meet there was this strange 'L' walking around, staring at girls in the skimpier or girlier costumes, my being one of them. My friend and I go to one side for a chat and he follows, her being too polite to ignore someone talking to her, I run off, look back and see he's grabbed and got her on the ground. Our other friend seperated them and I think that's the end of it, next thing I know it's my turn. Needless to say it'll be a while before I wear that costume again.

Girls, strong backhand is the way to go.

At Midlands Expo, I've had a free hugger grab me from behind and lift me into the air, refusing to put me down. It wasn't until I told him to 'get the f*** off me' several times before he put me down, then gave me a dirty look as if I'd done something wrong! If you're going to invade someone's personal space that you don't even know, don't be surprised if they're uncomfortable about it or fight back or something. :/ I was particularly pissed off because that was when I was wearing my Freya Crescent cosplay (which happens to also be my dream cosplay) so I'd made a point of staying away from free huggers all day. I guess you don't even have to make eye contact with them these days and they'll still jump on you!

Also at Midlands, my group were doing a photoshoot outside (and we didn't really want any inteferences), so we went quite far around the building to make sure that we'd be left in peace while we took some photos. But a group of cosplayers decided to follow us out anyway and one of them filmed us? It was really -really- weird.

At LFCC, I also had someone (who was quite obviously drunk) follow me around for a while and kept asking questions that I really didn't want to answer. It wasn't until my friend told him that he should leave me alone, me continually ignoring him and moving away from him every time he went near me that he buggered off.

Id always suggest to my female friends when ever i leave them alone in london for a min for a loo break if anyone suspicious comes along always ALWAYS! kick to the shins then an uppercut

but then that might not always be a good idea, another friend of mine who goes to gigs quite a bit suggest that when ever people invade her personal space for too long always pinch and twist the tricep which does hurt like hell

this isnt a con/expo exp and its not excatly creepy but tis still annoying specially for my friend sammy. so me and my friend go out to lunch and have a walk around town with our warm and furry cat hats (which btw are sooo warm and nice for winter ;D) and we walk around tescos then this group of 10 yr olds spots us and shout out HEY BUNNYS! my friend is like wtf bunnys!?! and then i have to calm her down cause she gets aggressive sometimes. so we pass by and walk around tescos looking at games/dvds/clothes and what not then about 10 mins later the kids are back and are shouting out BUNNY EARS BUNNY EARS which gets sammy annoyed and aggravated i have to try calm her down again and we settle for going back out through the lift way as were waiting the kids run back and forth near the corridor of the lift shouting bunnys etc etc which at this point even im starting to get annoyed, by the time we're able to leave the store they follow us out and keep on shouting.

this was during school half term in essex, sammy suggest the uk should adopt the education system of asia where they rarely get days off, have longer days of school and i think in some places you still have to go school on a sat. oh torturous fun for underpaid teachers eh

True, but the thing about 'strong' backhands is that you don't have to be very strong for them. Twisting the tricep is no good if you're a weakling like me. =(

hang on, i think i was that male friend? XD

anyway, probably my oddest cosplay experience was on the way to Kitacon in april, when i traveled all the way from Hull, to Northampton, wearing my fool cosplay (including the full purple catsuit). we had an hour stop off in Birmingham, and me and my friend (who was in Princess Zelda cosplay) went for a walk around the town. everywhere we went, i just kept getting people thinking i was superman! i would understand it if it was one isolated incident, but this was everywhere across town! do Fool and Superman really look that much alike? erm..... no XD

Nothing much has happened to me yet, I was with Mungojerrie when the cosplayers followed us and filmed us as we were doing the shoot. I didn't think much of it at the time but looking back, it was rather weird.

The only other time was at my first convention when this guy kept on following and smiling at me in a rather... creepy fashion. I was 14 and it was my first con so it did kind of shock me. I kind of clung to my friend Al for the rest of the convention. I was terrified. Now, I'd jsut tell him to og away, but at that age I had barely any confidence xD

07 Dec 2009 - 01:2123495
I think I've probably had a fair few weird experiences yet cant remember them.

Though the most weird, and creepiest thing I've ever had done onto me is one October Expo when dressed as Etna from Disgaea. I was positively weirded out by the number of guys that werent even going to the Expo but rather the big one across the way. Most of them mobile shots and a few being guys 2 to 3 times older then me. O-o I've never had so much male attention shall we say, so it was rather odd. *Usually only gets the girls*

One more I can say is not actually about me, but my friend. She was dressed as Toon Link from Wind waker and has gone out to do a few shoots after expo with my sister when they were suddenly approached by a bunch of 10 year old chavvie looking kids. One of them said to my friend. "Oh I'm hot for Link" and pulled their pants down so their.... Um.. Privates were showing and kind of began to "masturbate" or something. They left immediately but apparently he was still touching himself up infront of his friends even when they left.
