Skit Idea
Now...I've never done a skit before and there is one in my mind that I would love to do for most likely a MCM expo, given that I can get away with film stuff there

The skit in question is the Ruby Rap from Fifth Element, for those who don't know what I'm on about or want to lol then http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DK8ednS0skQ is your point of call.

I may tweak the performance somewhat to add more of the characters so that we can shove a Leelou in there somewhere.

Now! Serious face time...horrid leopard skin clothing aside...what are your thoughts on 'blacking up' as it where for the character of Ruby? I've been pondering the idea for some time and I feel quite racist about doing it that way... :/ Thoughts?

I know how you feel, was planning a Red Dwarf group sometime but the only character I wanna be is Cat XD

Sounds like an amusing idea though lolol

Cheers for that, I think I get it, if I keep it professional and a direct take of the film no harm done.

I think its a great idea and one that will be funny.

I don't think its racist at all as you'll be playing a character.

I personally don't see the difference between painting your skin brown in this case for Ruby, or painting it blue to cosplay the opera singer from the same film, if you did it as proper cosplay and not like the Mitchell and Web sketch - that makeup is done badly on purpose, for the laughs.

But the important thing is if YOU feel racist about doing it then I really recommend you not painting up, for your own conscience sake, and for others' - if you are uncomfortable others will pick up on it and also feel uncomfortable, = cosplay Fail. I hope that makes sense.

Do you have a black friend you could ask (male or female) who might be up for the Ruby part? ..then you could do the C-C-C Corben Dallas role yourself and still have your skit.

It's weird to consider this, given that I've painted myself blue for Freakazoid, I guess the issue is that I'm painting myself to look like another 'race' who do exist and with the racial stigma that follows that it's certainly not seen in a good light. Because even though you have the best of intentions people will make snap judgements.

Yeah it's a bit weird, but it depends what I'd be doing. I'm no actor, I've spent very little time on stage in my life anyway so if my experience mirrors my nerves then yes I can see it failing to an epic degree. This skit is still a long way off, I'd like to get some more skits in before I attempt this and since the actual voices will be done via a pre-recorded mp3 all I will have to worry about is stage pressence. But the nerves I've always felt before doing a masquerade run tend to turn into adrenaline once I'm out there.

Sadly I don't which I feel is a real shame and I wouldn't mind doing Mr Dallas at all so the door is open. What I might do is plan on ahead, get a small group together and if worst comes to worst back out last minute. I know that does seem somewhat cowardly but if I'm not 100% confident I'd rather not do it at all. Cheers for the points! It's something to consider

Yeah def plan on ahead. You are not cowardly, actually I think you are showing integrity. By the time you come to do this skit you might have found someone wanting to do the Ruby part. ^_^

Out of interest - will there be any stewardesses in the group? I love their lil blue outfits. =P

I have an almost perfect wig for the stewardeses
and i adore Gaultier's costume designs
I'd say I'd be up for it but the masquerade was the most nervewracking thing i've ever done and i can't even pose well let alone act!

I don't think you'd have to worry much about it while you're on stage, the stewardeses don't do an awful lot. I was thinking if we get two stewardeses minimum then we get those two on stage and I can end it by getting Ruby whispering to either a presenter or a judge. :3

I would love to have you both onboard for this, but I'm fully booked cosplay/skit wise until 2011. Shall keep you posted

Agi yu just have to stand up there and look sexy. That's easy in one of those blue stewardess costumes.
