Steampunk Novel - Flight of the Valkyrie
Ok guys, I've had a number of people contact me recently asking about this as obviously the characters that myself and the Crew of the HMS Valkyrie have worn are the characters' costumes from the novel.

I got quite a bit of interest at the October and May expos asking about it and we weren't even in Steampunk at May expo so...without futher ado...

I'm currently writing a steampunk novel, so this is quite inspirational. I love it~

Thank you very much! Can I ask how far through the story you are?

With mine? I'm not far, only a couple of pages into it at the moment. I go through bouts of writing loads and then nothing for weeks. XD

Aww that's a shame! I'm interested in seeing it!

Have you read much of mine?

I'm reading 'Flight of the Valkyrie' at the moment and really enjoying it! It's definitive Steampunk!

Recommended! Great work, SJ!

Thanks for the link! I have been wanting to read Flight of the Valkyrie since I first learned of Steampunk in October. Will dive in after the next two weekends of conventions.

I've finally gotten around to reading it all and I thought I'd give some feedback other than "it's awesome" (which I genuinely think it is but that's not helpful criticism).

The characters are well described and each of their mannerisms seems natural, and lends to each of their individuality. The story pacing is good, although as you are still writing it it is kinda hard to determine what the big picture as it's very centred on the crew, during a war. Which I personally like but I'm used to evaluating completed film scripts so I can't really comment too much on the comparisons, as they are (to me atleast) two completely different styles of writing. I look at things in a very 'Propp-ian' way, curse you Media studies!

Technology is well glossed over, there is enough information there for you to construct a visual representation in your head but not enough to limit peoples imaginations and you've managed to avoid running away with that front. I've seen many science fiction stories that LOVE to talk about the 'science' behind new bits of technology, and that detracts from the story. But you haven't done that in my eyes.

Because the story is set in 'our' world I found it quite easy to accept, which is something I try to steer clear of because when I used to write stories based on 'our' world I tended to write what I knew, so they were very central to either Bristol or London. So I've tended to write about fantasy worlds and just describe the locations as I went along, which poses new challenges but I'm rambling now so I'll stop.

The use of foreign languages I thoroughly enjoyed because I didn't understand it. In fiction I love things being left untranslated (although in context, which I assume it was as it adds a sense of scale to the world and mystery. Can't forget that.

Gah my mind has gone blank~

It's late that'll do. Hope that helps Sean.

Chapters 12 and 13 are now up on Deviantart!

Plus I got a lovely message today saying that people had been discussing Flight of the Valkyrie at Metrocon, a convention in Florida! So I am rather pleased!

Update to the novel, there's two new chapters, we're onto chapter 15 now and it will be ending in the next few chapters!
