Was it just me or was there a surge of people on the saturday this year numbers appeared to have dramatically increased thus baking everyone when they were all together. Growth in numbers is a good thing but maybe growth in floor space would help counteract it.

The floorspace does actually increase after every event but I think they underestimated the numbers this time round X_x; I too baked under the heat everybody emitted! Thus I spent most of the time outside or just sitting down doing nothing to cool myself down, Sunday was much more relaxed though so I was able to shop around freely. Heck Sunday seemed almost empty in comparison to Saturday! O_O;

The halls do indeed keep expanding, but Saturday really was ridiculously packed. I do agree that there could have been better signage/announcements for queues and special events.

I did really enjoy myself though, despite scary moments of possible cosplay breakage due to inconsiderate public (thankfully nothing happened to me, but I feel for anyone whose stuff did get damaged).

Meeting up with lots of you for lunch on Sunday was wonderful. I think Sunday is all around a better day, if you want to come for just a nice experience, relaxed shopping, fragile cosplay and hanging out with friends.

Saturday tends to be heaving, but is when most of our (Sweatdrop Studios) sales happen so I always have to be there to help. But yeah, if you're a dealer, Expo is a very hard event to beat - despite the current economic climate, sales were very good.

But we were getting SOOOO annoyed with the random idiots that wanted to use our Artist Alley supplies and paper and pens etc. to WRITE stupid signs. Hello, the provisions are for people who want to enter the competition, not your personal sign-making stand? *thwack* I really enjoyed hearing how Dock (my 6-foot-tall massive friend and head of SD) was resolute in one case of idiots, when he found out what they wanted the stuff for, he just took it back from them and said NO. Cue some name-calling, but any more than that and they wouldn't have stood a chance against him, haha.

Oh yeah something else that annoyed me a lot this year.
I noticed at least 10 people over the weekend taking not-very-subtle photos of me without asking. I understand if its a picture of a load of people or something, but coming up in front of me while I wait for someone and taking a photo is NOT good >.< I was wondering if anyone else noticed this, because I don't think I've experienced it before, but this time it did happen. Its like, geez, if you ask for a photo I'd say yes, but not asking is just rude.

26 May 2009 - 13:3114918
I did actually notice that a lot. It was quite funny really as I tend to charge along to get places and people kept trying to take pictures without asking, so all they got was this gold or blue blur.

I think the weirdest thing though is when you're with a friend dressed as someone from a completely different series and they ask for your photo together.

I mean, I can understand if you're wearing something obscure, but I was saint seiya right next to xae's witch king. I mean come on- can't people tell that the happy super armour of gold isn't from the same place as the creepy death armour of silver?

I noticed less people just taking pictures this time, but there were still plenty of them. Surely they must realise this is not a good way to get good photos? And theyu tended to be guys with good cameras too, rather than just point-and-clicks.

How did people feel about the masquerade this year?

26 May 2009 - 13:5414921
Yeah, thats kind of weird too. i was going around as Zhen Ji from Dynasty Warriors, and my friend (Special Pleb) was cosplaying Nia from Tengen Toppa, and people kept asking for our photos together. It sometimes makes me wonder if they even know the series, or they just want to get as many pictures as possible.

This happened a few times, just chatting with friends, not even looking at the camera. Then there was the more bizarre version of the people walking round Expo just throwing up the camera as they walked past, not even stopping or lining up a shot. Being flash blind mid-walk in a crowd is not good.

I do think the stage timetable needs some attention. Either less stage events throughout the day, or a second stage to spread them between so one event overrunning doesn't shove back the whole day. It's not fair on the audience/cosplayers/staff/vendors if the day runs late and with the masquerade being the last event of the day (and having heavy demand) it usually gets the blame. Though if I wrote that on the Expo forum I'm sure it would magically disappear.

Huge thanks to the guys running the masquerade, you do a sterling job.

Ailsa, I had no experience of the masquerade on Saturday, but on Sunday it was a TOTALLY positive experience, including the queue and the pre-judging. I think you guys did the best job I have ever experienced. There was more space, we all got seats, we were given plenty of water (GunstarVixen told me off for losing my cup LOL), sweets and were constantly checked on to make sure we were ok.

Thank you SO much guys!

I swear there used to be more than one stage, I'm going crazy I swear!

Aye the Cosplay Desk were LOVELY! Everybody was oh so friendly and helpful and helped cheered me up on Sunday when my costume was falling apart, thank you Ailsa especially for being really helpful to me! And everybody else for supplying water and sweets, it stopped me from dying XD!

26 May 2009 - 15:0414931
Glad to hear it Sean.

The extra space was so much better, and we're really glad expo could organise it for us. The chairs were another nice touch because it is a long time to wait.

As ever, all our volenteers were awesome and much appriciated.

Happy to help.

i noticed the photo thing too. i was Amulet Dia and people were asking for photos of me with my friend who was Haruhi.
also, alot of people were like "can i take your photo?"
"yeah sure"
"thanks *click* who are you and what anime are you from?"
"O-o"

why take a photo of someone if you don't know where they're from?

It was so unbelieveably hot this year though. i only went on saturday and baked.
my double sided sticky tape sticks everything to anything and it was slipping off my legs because it was so hot. who told me excel building had air conditioning? you need shooting. XD
if it does, it needed turning on.
although i suppose most of the problem had to do with the MASSIVE glass roof....

i didn't think the dealer's room was as good this year. last year had loads of stuff i wanted to buy but this year there wasn't as much and if i did want something it was way too expensive.

ALSO: the guys at the doors were going "keep moving guys, get out of the way to clear the entrance" blah blah blah and TokyoToys stall was RIGHT THERE! it's so popular surely it would help clear the way much better if it was placed slightly further back???
i dunno. i should probably be complaining to the expo people.... XD

rant over

There is only one thing that made me feel like punching someone in the face and that is quite a statement since I'm usually a very laidback and calm person.

The group in front of me in the backstage masquerade queue had a guy who was holding a camera.
At first, he kept taking photos of the feet of the girls who were in his skit group, so I thought he had a foot fetish. The girls noticed but didn't seem to bother. He began to take photos of their "front regions between the legs" and the girls started to giggle and fob him off, but didn't act like they were really uncomfortable with it. He moved onto taking photos of their cleavage from a high angle; again they didn't act like they seriously hated it.
This is a very indecent thing to do but as they were a prt of his group/his friends I thought I shouldn't interfere.

The thing that made me want to perform a German Suplex on him was the fact he carried on doing this and moved onto other cosplayers in the masquerade queue who were unfortunate enough to be facing him/facing directly away from him so he could zoom into their cleavage/buttocks. I know quite a few of my friends have fallen victim to this man's dirty attitude towards the general public. I was going to report him to the Expo co-ordinators but the masquerade was about to begin so it would cause a huge inconvenience for everybody and possibly unwanted embarassment.

Name and shame this person: he looked Indian/arabic in nationality, had medium & slightly wavy hair just above his shoulders, was wearing a green blazer and did a dancing skit which was the 5th entry of the 16+ section of the masquerade.

Come to think of it, I should have reported him to the Expo steward on the Sunday.

Oh my god. I now have this distinct fear that he got me.

Guh, perv hate.

Well, revenge is always mine in the end. I'm making straight pervs gay one crossplay at a time. Me wearing Ivy is hilarious IMO due to this.

Man, it's a good thing Matt didn't catch him. Matt is like a Knight in Shining Armour sometimes. Especially this weekend.

There were these girls (I think from One eye manga or something- the logo was white with an eye on it) going around putting stickers on people on sunday, and one got Xae while they were at my stall. I spotted her doing it, took it off their sleeve and told Xae about it, Matt over hearing. Matt goes "That's so out of order! Who did this?"

I point her out, Matt goes over. She looks terrified, Matt comes back. Accordingly the conversation went like this:

"You can't just go around putting stickers on people- You just put this on my friend and they worked really hard on their costume!"

"But it's a sticker- it comes off"

"WELL WHAT IF IT DIDN'T?!"

We then checked down Xae to make sure nothing else was on their witch king. While it makes me angry I feel good knowing they got told off. So thank you Matt!

Please let us know if anything like this is happening and making you uncomfortable, espcially in the masquerade queue.

Creepy perverts not welcome.

Yeah, nooo~
I was attacked by that guy! -perv hates as well- I felt concious enough with my boobs out like that, him no-stealthily taking photo's was so..;0;.

Yeah, otherwise backstage at the masquerade was really good on the Saturday as well. All the cosplayers were really nice (it was my first masquerade, I was half expecting there to be major competition tension!). The staff made sure you had enough water and food, and they door was left open so that we didn't over heat. I was so nervous, but everyone told me to calm down, haha.

The only think that annoyed me backstage was the fact that towards the end about 5 people came up to me at seperate times and said that after a certain time they weren't letting anyone else in the line onto the stage - which like really stressed me out hard core. But thankfully it was a lie, I wish they hadn't have hyped me up like that ;-;

I really enjoyed the expo, but that could have been because my costume got a lot of attention (for the first time ever). Couldn't take many steps before someone stopped, and I had a few people try to hug me when I said no, but luckily Rob (the Chaos champion) hit them with his prop (it was safe!) before they could break it!
Apart from one hugger, who pestered me until I said yes (with out Rob or Chris at this time) and as he went to hug me he just totally stared at my boobs. I KNOW THEY WERE THERE OK, ;-; IT MADE ME WISH I HAD NEVER CHOSEN THAT COSPLAY.

But yeah, I thought the atmosphere was great this year, despite it being baking hot!

i think i was gotten by that guy too. i had serious cleavage problem at expo. had to tape my top down. apparently the bra i was wearing didn't like the top of my cosplay.

and i absolutely F*&%£"$%%£ING hate free huggers!!!
i usually say hell no but the persistant ones are so freaking annoying!!
i even walked off and one followed me and stood in front of me so i couldn't walk off again!
I mean, where do they get off???

one stall was even giving out Free Hugs signs!! WHY AREN'T THEY BANNED YET????? can someone please enlighten me as to why they haven't been banned yet? soooo many people complain about them and i think signs should be put up and things and people reminded about it so ignorance is not an excuse.
it's an invasion of personal space, especially the ones who ignore your requests to get lost.

Tab: That's just great, I'm glad people learnt a lesson.= about keeping things to themselves sometimes.
No the creepy pervert guy didn't get you because you were in the front near the stage entrance. He was sat right in front of me and Xae so we both gave each other looks and a sigh, acknowledging the guy.

Nat: He may have got you, but if I catch him in the act next year I will definitely report him with a smug feeling that justice always prevails.

Ailsa: Thanks for the headsup, I just didn't want to disrupt the masq since it was about to commence and the audience had been waiting for long enough.

there were alot of pervs tbh this year

for those who mite or mite of not met my friend rob who has many of a piercing actually stormed over to a creepy perv photographer trying to take pantie shots of girls walking past. He was sitting in the hall part on the floor aparently and mainly aimed for girls looking very young. He reported it but not sure if anything was done about it.

-I had a guy in his 20's hit my with a Yuri paddle on the saturday without permission. I cudnt find a member of staff in time to report it but it hurt and he followed by saying "you have to give me some Yuri now"

seriously do some people have no dignity at these events?

sunday i was with the gurren lagann group most of the day so i didnt recieve much trouble thankfully ^^

26 May 2009 - 19:0114957
Well done to your friend Rob for having the guts to do that.

(By the way it was good to meet you at last, Chevi!)

The ticket queue was incredibly well air conditioned, as was the main exhibition hall. I was ACTUALLY shivering with cold during the judging on Sunday brrrr! (Serves me right for wearing sleeveless numbers both days.)
Everywhere else was blisteringly sweltering I shall agree!
The evenings were a welcome refreshment from the heat.

In all seriousness, if someone is acting inappropriately, be it taking pervy pictures or anything else that is clearly an unwanted invasion of your personal space let us know as soon as you can so that we can do something about it. We especial want to know if it's in the masquerade queue. All to often we only here about it after the event and that makes it difficult to deal with.

This doesn't just go for Expo, if your at any anime event let the committee know!

Free Hugs signs:
At an event like Expo how do you stop it? With an estimated 22000 people through the doors on Saturday you would need a dedicated team of people policing that ban to make it stick and Expo struggles to get enough Stewards to cover it's needs as it is. They were at least doing there best to put a stop to all of the more offensive signs.

My suggestion would be to go up to free huggers and tell them what you think (politely), if enough people do this the attraction of being a free hugger might just wear off.....maybe....we can hope
