Where do you live? Furniture foam isn't the most common thing, but you're looking for somewhere that does furniture making / restoration. I know some places in the Bristol area if you are down that way?

The best place is next to the nylon shop in Kingswood, see the shops section on the forum for details. They also sell a bit in St Nicks market. Finally, the curtain shop next to the cinema in Bath used to have off cuts, though I didn't see any last time I was in.

That being said, I think you'd be better with camping mat (or even cardboard) over a plastic tube for the handle.

If you check my gallery and look at Uriel, the scythe I made there was cardboard and tape LOL ^_^ It worked really well and is the same size/almost the same shape as Marluxia's scythe.

Pink insulation foam is good for prop making, I made Demyx' sitar out of it once for an expo (sadly my brother broke it before said expo -_-) you can get it from B&Q and its very good for carving into and shaping and can be stuck together with coving adhesive, but that needs a good few hours to set. Cover it in vinyl ripple and sand it down and you get a rock hard, smooth, paint-able surface. I never tried painting on just the foam, but do be careful if you choose not to seal your foam with vinyl ripple, as some paint can eat away at the foam, especially spray paint. It comes in big packs of about four, if you ask the guys at B&Q, they should know what you're after. Its usually in the timber area. Think it cost me about £24 for four sheets.

You might not be able to do much in a day though when it comes to foam, its hard work to carve into, even more so if you aren't good with a jigsaw or hot wire. A hot wire is best for getting nice smooth shapes and edges, though if you can't get a big one, its time consuming (Model shops sell them usually). And jigsaws are quicker, but leave a rough edge which will need more sanding than with a hot wire. Just be flipping careful with a jigsaw, you do NOT want to rush with one of those if you value your hands.

I did Demyx' sitar in three weeks and that was rushing. >.<

If you do use insulation foam, your best bet is to draw out your shape roughly, measure it so its even and to the scale you want it, then cut it out slowly so you don't break anything, as foam tends to vibrate like mad when you use anything powered to cut through it and the vibrations can snap edges, so getting someone to press down on the foam while you cut always works, just be careful of fingers and hands. You might also want to create a T-bar out of dowel rod to be placed in a cut out channel in the blade, as then it has more support inside, which stops it breaking as easily. Then you can either fill the channel in with coving adhesive or put another layer of foam on top of it so its sandwiched between tow layers of foam.

Then once you have the rough shape sorted and its all how you want it to be, you can either make adjustments via the jigsaw to get it even, or hand sand it with sandpaper, or use a palm sander, which is way way quicker, and will give your foam a nice even finish. Once you do that, cover it in vinyl ripple, a good thick coat, let it dry over night, then sand it down so its smooth, once thats done, blow off the excess dust and its ready for painting.

Sorry if thats confusing, its hard to explain without diagrams, and sadly my sitar is in hiding thanks to my brother damaging it.
