I don't think my parents mind too much either way about the act of cosplaying itself. I think I've somehow managed to convince them that it's an integral part of the fandom. As long as I don't spend too much money, or I assure them that I can afford it they won't get on my case about it.
While I was still at university and returning home during holidays I'd actually get my mum to make the odd piece for me, as I can't sew. Although she would need strict instructions to ensure it was right. Last time she made me a Bleach captain's haori she had to make it again because she put a seam up the back of it while I was away from home. I think because she isn't an anime fan she doesn't have the attention to detail that I would have. Not that I'm not extremely grateful for her work; it's because of her that my two best Bleach cosplays were as good as they were.
