Opinions on Costume?
Hi, for my A level Textiles project I made a costume for a Sci-fi film and wondered if you could answer some questions on what you think about it if you have time.

The design is for the main character (female) and is for a fight scene in the film. For inspiration I looked at 1960s/70s aesthetics. If there is anything else you'd like to know just ask.

Here are the questions:
1) Do you like the design?
2) Why do you like/not like it?
3) Do you think that there could be any improvements to the design?
4) Would you go and see the film based on seeing the aesthetics?
5) Is there anything else you would like to mention?

Thank you very much for helping me out!!!

Answers from a (not great ;D) cosplayer
Hey - Thought I'd give my two cents for you on this since you're looking for opinions.

1) Do you like the design?

The design is very simple, yet very effective. It is very reminiscent of the old-school sci-fi shows, such as the original Star Trek outfits.

2) Why do you like/not like it?

I like it as it's simple, yet identifiable. Easy to enjoy, pleasing to look at.

3) Do you think that there could be any improvements to the design?

Personal thing, I think the area around the backside isn't quite what I'd expect. Not sure if it's an improvement idea, but that's just a personal thought. I'm personally not too sure what can be done, though!

4) Would you go and see the film based on seeing the aesthetics?

I was never the biggest sci-fi fan, although these days I have taken to watching more sci-fi stuff than ever before...

So possibly! I especially like the older sci-fi shows, like Star Trek as previously mentioned.

5) Is there anything else you would like to mention?

Great work on this outfit! Keep up the great work

1) Do you like the design?

overall, yes

2) Why do you like/not like it?

Like Melvinator, I like the simplistic values of the design and how it echoes that off early sci-fi. The design would make the character very easily identifiable.

3) Do you think that there could be any improvements to the design?

I dislike the area around the backside (again like Melvinator). However, I can say why. The band that is just on the back near the bum; it shouldn't be there. It looks wrong.

It needs some bit of blue on the back, but not there.

My suggestion, would be to the two vertical lines like the front has, and put them on the back as well.

4) Would you go and see the film based on seeing the aesthetics?

I don't watch things based on outfits, I'm afraid

5) Is there anything else you would like to mention?

Only that it bothers me you can see the zip, but there is nothing you can do about that lol

Oh! And it's really good work

1) Do you like the design?

Overall, yes it's striking in it's simplicity!

2) Why do you like/not like it?

I like the colours, not overly in your face but still they stand out. I like the clean lines of the design, it's feminine while not being fussy.

3) Do you think that there could be any improvements to the design?

I think the cut around the legs could be improved, possibly with more of a leotard shaping around the buttocks, instead of a horizontal band, one which follows the line of the bottom a bit better and accentuates it more. More space in the crotch area would probably help get the right shape if you didn't want to change the horizontal band (though I would lower it in order to prevent any misshaping of the bottom).

From a design perspective I would perhaps avoid the horizontal band at the back and instead use a chevron on the back as you've got predominantly vertical and diamond (creating chevron like) shapes, the horizontal line stops the design being as cohesive as it could be. Again personal opinion ^^;

4) Would you go and see the film based on seeing the aesthetics?

I'd love to say yes, but I like my sci fi a little grittier.

5) Is there anything else you would like to mention?

I don't think so!

1) Do you like the design?

It's a professional finish, but I'm not personally into it. It's a little like the original Power Rangers outfits, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

2) Why do you like/not like it?

Perhaps I don't watch enough old sci-fi, but as far as I can recall from Classic Dr Who and stuff most 70s/80s futuristic costumes were solid colour or monochrome.

I do, however, love the little cuff rings. I'm after replicating some Cyberdog-style hoodies and would be really interested to know how you did that.

3) Do you think that there could be any improvements to the design?

I know others don't like the bum area, and I can see why (even though I think it's pretty true to the skimpy 70s scifi!). I would 'pad out' the area a little, with more of a short-shorts/box effect if that makes sense.

4) Would you go and see the film based on seeing the aesthetics?

As I said before, this only puts me in mind of Power Rangers from the diamonds so probably not. I think for true 70s/80s flair, it needs some pointed shoulder pads or a upward pointed gauntlet to the sleeves.

5) Is there anything else you would like to mention?

If you're still after inspiration, I can highly recommend Barbarella, Flash Gordon and Babylon 5.
