tactical vest/flak jacket/stab vest advice. WHICH? and if none...what is my alternative!
hello again! looking for some further assistance with my original major cosplay...i'm ALMOST sorted. i'm working on the arm/leg pieces, ordered northern ireland gloves to be cut down, working on the czn m22 etc etc..but im really stuck with what to buy/make as her vest...looks like a mix of a stab vest, tactical/assault vest, flak vest, WHATEVER... all of those things...

http://www.cosplayisland.co.uk/files/costumes/3320/73635/CI_73635_1393320429.jpg

...the above link should take you to the image i'm referring to...

what would you advise i used for this? i'm looking ideally for a piece i can buy and then alter as my sewing skills aren't amazing, however, if you honestly think it needs to be built from scratch, im happy to give it a bash with good instruction!

THANKYOU x

any help always appreciated, thanks *bump*

Do you have any better reference pictures? It's a tad hard to see, but it looks like a slightly padded all-over vest with a lack front section and a padded collar? It reminds me of the flak vest I had to make for my partner's resident evil cosplay - I couldn't find anything close enough to modify unfortunately, though I'm not an expert with tac vests, so there might be something close out there. Personally however I'd suggest trying to get a few more reference pics and using them to make or commission it

hey! thanks for getting back to me! i've struggled SO MUCH for ref pix for this (hence the massive amount of posting i've done about this cosplay).

i suspect i might have to make something from scratch..which will not be easy but i may have no choice!

- this is one of the best images i can find ANYWHERE...after months of searching and freaking out about it!

thankyou x

Ah, that's a much better reference. It looks like it has boob cups and the shoulder detailing is more obvious.
Personally I'd go for making it as a soft vest using fabric with wadding in the middle, except for the bra area which I'd make lined with a thin foam to keep the shape a bit more. I'd suggest having the back curve around to where it poppers and up to join the front at the shoulders, then sewing the actual shoulders and neck into this.

this is so helpful! i'll have a stab at making it myself i guess! what fabric would you recommend for the vest? also, would i make the front/chest piece separately in a different fabric as in the film the vest appears grey and the front panel black...if i do so...what would be the best way to attach it?

THANKYOU! x

What materials you use would depend on what look you want. If you wan it shiny I'd say a fake leather, otherwise flak vests look good in something like a thick fabric where the grain is visible, maybe canvas or cotton drill to be cost-effective.
Yeah, make the front panel seperately. Sew it straight to the grey panels, just leave the sides open with the popper fastenings to get it on and off

For a vest with that correct shoulder sections (ribbed padding) your best bet would be the BLACKHAWK S.T.R.I.K.E Elite or Omega Vest.

Definitely can't buy one with boob cups though.

i definately want it to look more like a proper flak vest - i'll have to look into cotton drill - not something i'd heard of to be honest but i'm sure it'll be great!

thanks so much for your help on this, really means alot that you've taken the time out to give me so much advice!

i'll do some planning this weekend...SO EXCITED!

No worries If you like I can see if I have time to do you a quick sketch of how I'd suggest approaching it - would that be helpful at all?

had a look at these..they're a great suggestion but i think it would almost be more work/cost to adjust one of these as opposed to making one from scratch! thanks so much though x

It is a pretty good match around the shoulders, but In fact, if I'm looking at the right vest, it'd cost less to get the right get commissioned than buy one of those base vests.

If you look at vests like that though it might give you idea on how they're put together.

I agree, its definately worth look at, i think the shoulder details are much thicker on kusanagis though, and there's the high neck etc that are missing. i think it will cost alot mess to make one but its a great inspiration and i agree, it will certainly help to show the construction of similar garments

Yes, they are unfortunately by no means cheap, as with all military gear sadly.

BUT!

If it's military gear I guarantee someone has cloned it:

Oh and this style has a collar:

i do like that one, but i still fear i'll have to make one from scratch to carry it off properly! its a scary prospect!!!

Good luck with that!

Thankfully I prefer building the weaponry which usually just involves assembly and modding rather than fabrication!

i'd love to mod something if i thought i could succesfully, but i think in this case there's just so many alterations that i'm better building from scratch.

in the case of her weapon (czn m22) i originally wanted to mod an airsoft famas or p90. but i'm so financially restricted that im currently building it from wood/eva/card....ITS CRAZY!
