hand gun and assault rifle help! weapons tutorials?
Morning all!

I started a thread a good while ago discussing my options for making my own CZN M22 assault rifle (a fictional weapon for section 9 as used by motoko kusanagi in the original 95' ghost in the shell film)

http://www.cosplayisland.co.uk/forum?c=showthread&ThreadID=9572

(see said thread above)

Originally i was interested in modding an airsoft P90 or FAMAS...but its been a long time since posting this and its clear it's beyond my budget so i want to get a little homemade on it.

http://www.cosplayisland.co.uk/costume/view/73635

There are a couple of blueprints of it on the above link but i'd like some advice on how to best get started. If anyone has any links to any good tutorials i'd really appreciate it.

Luckily I work as a technician in the art department of a high school and the technology department are happy to help in the woodshop and using the lasercutter if needed. i just really need some advice.

also... she used a cz 100 in the opening scenes (which is actually the outfit i'm hoping to cosplay of hers first) and i wondered where i could get either a de-ac cz100 or ideally a cheap replica, or a replica that is similar to the cz 100 until i can afford one.

MANY THANKS xxx

I've seen airsoft Seburo weapons from Appleseed and Ghost in the Shell on the web, but they are very expensive and would have to be imported from Japan, and regular airsofts, even spring ones are not cheap either, so I guess its DIY

Can't say I'm an expert, but I've modified a few toy guns and built an Mass Effect Assault rifle from scratch

Think there are 2 ways to go about it, first would be to modify a toy, Nerf guns are an obvious starting point, and a few are quite futuristic and could make a reasonable base for a GITs (I'm a Ghost in the shell fan too) weapon, but you might have to disable the mechanisims in them to make them con safe. Another source for reasonnably realitic looking toy hand guns is Poundland and other pound shops, they have them in the toy section every now and then. Sometimes you can find full sized (note some are too small for adult hands, so check first) toy guns on market stalls as well. Regular toy stores don't stock realistic toy guns these days though, as guns aren't very pollictically correct.

Then its a matter of cutting them up, gluing bits of plastic and foam and pumbing supplies etc to them and painting them. I steampunked a Nerf Maveric pistol with bits of pipe and wire, bottle caps, a little pressure valve and a model steam engine

If you can't find a base, built from scratch, get or draw a plan of your weapon and try to break it down into flat layers, (so you grip and magazine might be one or two layers, but you would have extra ones for the hand grips and stock etc) which you can cut out from thick (about 1/2 inch depending on your design) sheet material like EVA foam, wood, MDF or dense styrofoam and then glue together and fill up all the gaps and add detail with then sheets of foam or plastic, bits of pumbing supplies, pens, any stuff you have aroud the house etc.

This is how I did my Mass Effect M8 Avenger rifle, I found an outline on line, broke it up into layers on my PC in photshop, printed off them as templates and used the templates to cut out sections of 12mm and 8mm EVA foam (because I had some left over from by ME armour build) and glued them together, then used a dremel and sandpaper and lots of filler to smooth out the joins, carved panel lines etc into it and then added details, the gun barrels where large pens, the telescopic sight was a torch, the round bits on the side where pumping things to connect pipes, bolts where pins etc. Have a wander around hardware shops and pound shops etc you can often find bits and pieces you can buy cheaply that you can incorporate in your build

Perhaps have a look at my effort http://www.cosplayisland.co.uk/costume/view/80398.
If I was to do it again I wouldn't use EVA foam though, its a bit soft for hard details and doesn't sand well, I would probably use blue high density styrofoam and/or wood

Your czn looks like quite complex, but if simplify it a bit it looks doable, perhaps make the bulk of it it with a single thick piece (or glue together layers) of foam or wood and add layers of thin craft foam on top to add detail, sand the grip down to make it rounded, make the sides of the sight out of plasticard, barrel from pens or bits of pipe etc. Its all a matter of breaking down the design into more simple pieces you can build or adapt from stuff.

After builing, prime it with grey acrylic car primer spray paint, sand and fill it and maybe give it a second coat and more sanding, actually this pahse can go on for a bit. Then paint with spray cans, for a more metailic look paint it all silver or metalic first then put a black or dark grey coat on top . Add detail and simulate wear and tea by dry brushing highlight with silver paint on edges and bumps

But there are plenty of resources on the web, done by people who really know what they are doing, have a look at this guys work, he's really really good http://www.volpinprops.com/blog/

Also there's weapon bulders on The RPF and the Halo costumers on the 405th also build rifles. Also check this guy on youtube who builds complete rifles by simply carving them out of blocks of styrofoam http://www.youtube.com/user/DaFrontlineTrooper/videos

Look forward to seeing you finished work

hello! first off i must sincerely thankyou for taking the time to put together such a lengthy reply!

i am away of airsoft seburos but i agree; very expensive! i know im going to have to go D.I.Y..which im happy with

i checked out your mass effect rifle and it looks great

i think i'd struggle to find a NERF that was similar in shape to the czn, or even a famas or p90..but i could certainly look into it! i've seen many great nerf mods. but you never know what you might find in pound shops and stuff - as you suggested!

im just about to leave work so im afraid i havent got time for a more thorough reply but i will do at a later time. honestly though, you've given such great advice and i fully intend to take it on board, and i look forward to checking out the links you posted

x many thanks x

Hrmm a Nerf Rayven CS-18 http://www.toysrus.co.uk/Toys-R-Us/Outdoor-and-Sports/Garden-Toys/Nerf-N-Strike-Rayven-CS18-Blaster(0092157)?searchPosition=0 might be possible as a starting point, Google these, I think they are still available, its a bullpup like the CZN M22 and not completely dissimilar , you might need to remove a few bits, maybe lengthen it a bit, add a fore stock and fit a different magazine etc. The magazine on the CZN looks like one from an M4 and similar contemporary rifles (I've played far to many FPS games you see), you might be able to find an airsoft or a toy one?

But if you want to build from scratch, well the CZN basically a box with a magazine on the back, grips at the front and a sort of boxy sight on top isn't it, you could make it hollow of sheet material (plywood, sintra, styrene, foamboard etc) or solid from thick sheets, the grips could be wood so you can sand them to a smooth shape, then add details out of sheet, carve in panel lines and screw in bolts into it etc, make the barrel from a pen or some tube etc It looks doable to me though might take a few weeks depending on you degree of perfectionisim

I'll reply in here as well, this looks like as close as you're going to get as an "off the shelf" version:
