Creating patterns in faux leather
Long time since I've been on here, but I return asking for help from fellow cosplayers who have more sense than I!

I'm cosplaying Mary Read from Assassin's Creed 4 in May, and while I have sourced my fabric and my pattern and everything else, one part is eluding me and that is the patterning she has on the leather part of her coat;

The picture isn't great and I have no idea what it looks like under her belts, but from what I can see, it looks like it is embossed leather. Sadly I cannot afford to buy real leather and emboss it, as I just don't have the resources and time to do this. I have tried it with fake leather, and tried following a similar method of embossing like you do with real leather which is to clean it, dampen it down and then weight the stamper into it for over six hours and while I did get a pattern, it wasn't very strong and after a few days it had smoothed out.

I had a few ideas but was wondering if anyone else had embossed or put a pattern on faux leather before?

My first idea was to use black glue in my glue gun (I have black glue sticks from sweet deco XD) and use that to sort of make a pattern on the leather and then smooth it out a little so it's not so raised. The second was to draw the pattern on then sew it into the leather. Third was cut the pattern out and lay it on top of regular faux leather, but then as the pattern is so small I might not be able to finish the edge too well since it'd be so small and fiddly. Has anyone else got any suggestions?

ETA: I did find this - http://www.ebay.com/itm/WOW-FACTOR-BLACK-PATTERN-LEATHER-PVC-WET-LOOK-STRETCH-FABRIC-MATERIAL-/200923098671?pt=UK_Crafts_Fabric&hash=item2ec7f32e2f

which would be perfect but I am a tiny bit weary in just buying it if there would be another solution, since it might not match the faux leather I have for the plain bit beneath her belt in colour.

have you tried embossing using heat?
as faux leather isnt real leather you might need to warm it up to make the pleather....contract or something?

only other way of embossing i know is the way crafters do it with stamps, embossing powder and a heat gun

Just to go off on a brief tangent, do you know how to create the stamps posted on the above link? Is there a commission website?

i do papercrafting and there are a ton of websites for stamps. most of them are clear stamps for stamping so you can see where you need to place them for any of them will do its just the ink that you need to change for specific things like embossing or different materials
