cosplaying non specific characters
At the London expo most people I saw were cosplaying specific characters and I was wondering would it be acceptable if I were to cosplay a non specific character like a member of the recon corps rather than Levi or Eren for example

People cosplay original characters all the time and there's no hard and fast rules about what you can and can't cosplay. No reason why you can't cosplay a generic survey corps member- the outfit is distinctive enough that people will know what you're from. Or you could design your own character that would fit in to the Survey Corps.

Sure you can do that! A few years ago some friends of mine cosplayed as knights of Camelot from the BBC Merlin series. Not any specific characters, just misc. knights and other fans really liked their costumes and idea.

No reason at all why you can't do something similar with other fandoms.

Like peopel above said, no rules some characters are just more popular than others.

i always do like it when people reconise who im cosplaying though, so if you are a lesser known character you might not get that as much. Although if you're with a group, it might be more obvious who you are dressed as

in the end it's all about having fun!

Generic costumes are much easier when there's a uniform, like the OP's recon corps.

I've seen a fair few generic Hogwarts students, soldiers, and schoolgirls.

It would definitely be acceptable as it's totally for you to decide who or what you want to cosplay as ( as long as it's convention-safe and not offensive of course ). As already said there are already a fair number of people who cosplay as original characters and the Attack on Titan uniforms are very distinctive and recognisable. Maybe you could see if there's an AoT group that you can join as there are lots of people cosplaying from it at the moment. It sounds like it's what you want to do so feel free to go for it! =)

Personally I do prefer to choose specific characters, but I did join as part of a Team Rocket Grunt group for Ame 2008 since I wanted to join in with the recent friends that I had made at FuyuCon. I felt that my cosplay would feel a bit too random, but when we all got together it was actually very effective and well-received.
