Lightening black fabric?
Hello! I'm thinking about how to go about my Asch cosplay from Tales of the Abyss - http://www.cosplayisland.co.uk/costume/view/77365

I need some help with his tabard (that big thing with the red design on it). It's not black but more of an off-black colour... so before I go down the scary route of trying to dye the colour, is it at all possible to get some black fabric and lighten it? Or would this be harder than dyeing it?

Thank you ^^

Try using 'Charcoal' when searching. I just did this on ebay and it came up with closer shades but I wasn't sure what sort of fabric you'd be using.

Alternatively I found this shade of dye if you want to go down that route:

Hope this helps!

I'd guess you'd need to use a very dilute bleach solution if you wanted to lighten it (googling turned up this: http://www.ehow.co.uk/how_8539200_lighten-fabric.html and this http://www.ehow.co.uk/how_8453795_lighten-fabric-color.html). My assumption would be that it would probably be easier just to gradually dye it in stages than try to lighten it, as it could be quite easy to overdo it with lightening.

Edit: Trying searching for dark grey as well as charcoal like Angel suggested fabric seems to turn up a few options that might work.

I was going to suggest searching for "charcol fabric" as well.
I'm trying to decide if I should go for black or slightly off-black for something myself.
