Cosplaying as flawed/damaged characters
I've just been musing on my choice of cosplays, and with a couple of exceptions it seems the majority are either villains, insane, or flawed in some major way. It came up because I'm watching Black Lagoon, and my two potential cosplays are a psychotic killer who lives a lie to cope, and a military veteran who is completely dead inside. (cookie for the first to spot who they are )

I'm working from a limited pool (charaters I like, from sources I like) so I'm not sure if all interesting characters are damaged in some way, or if I'm just drawn to characters like this.

Do any of you notice this with your choices? Do any of you mostly cosplay as paragons of virtue?

I was having a look through my costumes and it seems like I tend to go for characters who are good but many of them have dark pasts. I've got a woman who is hopelessly in love with someone who really isn't a very nice person, a guy who is basically running away from facing up to the consequences of his past and in my in progress costumes theres a character from a series that basically embodies angst. There are two who I would consider villains of their respective series (although one of those is basically a nice person who got screwed over by destiny). I think its not tha hard to see why damaged and flawed characters are more appealing to some people, they tend to make the story more interesting. I can get bored of heroes/ protagonists who always do the right thing or are good at everything.

Oh I'll go out on a limb and guess that you're talking about Roberta and the other... maybe Baladika?

I used to have a running joke that I only cosplayed "bitches" and Johnny Depp.

Much like you, Pandora, I'm drawn towards characters with an edge. I find them more psychologically interesting, they often get the outfits that appeal more to me, and because I'm pretty mild in real life, the idea of playing psychotic types who express themselves in ways I never could is interesting and appealing. By and large, they also tend to be the characters that suit my body type a bit more - in a lot of anime/manga/video games, the "good" characters are usually younger, slimmer and more childlike, whereas the "bad" ones tend to have a more mature look to them. I'm not personally comfortable cosplaying too far from my body type so it's just as well that those are the characters that mostly appeal to me!

As I go on, I find that it tends to be less about good/evil characters and more about complex characters with strong personalities (again, because I feel my own personality is not particularly strong, playing these characters lets me experience it vicariously). But I've just never been interested in "cookie cutter" characters except as a joke. Real people are flawed and complex, so the more a character reflects that, the more interesting they are.

yea, it seems the same with Jason Voorhees from Friday The 13th. No matter which version I try to think of doing, I find it's either flawed or damaged.

Yeah, I think it's the complexity that I've been drawn to Odangochan. Although as I'm getting older, I'm looking more at larger than life characters too. Dark and realistic can get a bit depressing. So I want to try something cheesier for variety. Disneys animated version of Captain Hook is on the to-do list, as is Brave And The Bold's Aquaman. And there's a few other characters floating around in my head.

Bravo! Roberta was suggested in the "Who should I cosplay as" thread, so I checked out Black Lagoon, and it's great. Roberta would be fun, but I like to cosplay to show my love for characters. And Balalaika is amazing.

I've just had a quick look over mine, a lot of them including future ones I haven't yet added to my planned seem mostly to be characters who aren't quite so confident in themselves and rely on friends to keep them going, or hold strong importance in their friendships. Without it I'm pretty sure they'd crumble or be unable to take on their personal challenges.

The one that does seem to be the most damaged and flawed is one that I'll be cosplaying as in two weeks time. Aya Drevis from Mad Father. I wont go into details in case people actually wish to play it and have it unspoiled. She seems pretty interesting to me because her appearance lies about her true nature.

*looks at mine*

Okay, so have a woman obsessed in trying to physically take another's womb, some deranged murderers, someone who's suffered abuse and many other ones...

Maybe just a little

IDK, I guess I'm just not fond of sweetness and light characters. I like those with a bit of mystery and depth.
