Crossplay Basics
I want to attempt to cosplay female characters... The one I have in mind is one or two from Hetalia since their dresses might make it easy to see if it'll work...

What should I look into to getting the shape needed for the characters I want to cosplay

I've heard about shaping the waist, shoulders and chest... Is it that I get the costume first to a size near mine in the female shape and pad out to make it fit me... or do I do the shaping first then get the costume to fit?

Any tips will be helpful.

Pad first.

Get a bra and padding. Get a waist cincher, or corset, or control shorts. Consider hip and but padding. (If you have a local Aldi or Lidl, keep an eye out. They often have shapewear in their "random stuff" section)

Then put it all on and use those measurements when ordering your costume

How do I work out how much padding I need? Chest and Waist mainly...)

Mostly its a case of judging it by eye.

Conveniently I've done an article on fake boobs for cosplay - http://justcosplayblog.wordpress.com/2013/02/23/pandora-boobs-for-beginners/.

Generally a C-cup bra will do. The band size is your chest size in inches rounded down to the nearest even number.

For the waist, get yourself a pair of high waisted control pants. Getting a corset is a bit of an investment, and not something I use, so yopu'll have to wait for other replies on that XD
