Painting Foam Help?
Hey ^^ I have just aquired a nerf maverick which I am currently modding for a steampunk character and general "I havent grown up yet and love shooting guns" kinda situation. The nerf has painted black nicely *I wasnt worried* the brass and silver work will commence tonight. while that is drying I wanted to know if anyone can suggest how to paint the foam bullets you get? I think the colour of them is really gonna bring the look down and would really love someone suggestions please ^^

I have no clues at all only a reference picture, any help apreciated?

The only thing I can think of is priming them with a thick layer of pva or maybe using latex. I'm not sure how safe they'd be to shoot after though.

You could also use gloss (which takes a while to dry but it is used for waterproofing wood and metal railings and suchlike outside so you can be sure it will be waterproof), or you could use some form of paste, thin papiermache pulp or something like that and then sand it down.

Foam, generally, you just need to put enough layers on until it stops sinking in and absorbing it. Though you wouldn't be able to shoot them afterwards as they will be far too hard I reckon, to be on the safe side. If acrylic paints or oil is mixed thick enough they can also cover it up but little air bubble holes will probably appear until you have loads of layers. Unfortunately I can't think of any "easy" way to paint on foam... believe me I've tried!

depending on what look you are trying to achieve, you could always just take a black marker pen to them. It won't sink in and will still feel like foam, just less orangey! It wont make them look more realistic though, but might make then stand out less..
