Transparent sword help? Sailor fuku tips/patterns/help - fabric stores in West Midlands?
Hi, I wondering if I could get some help for a planned costume. The anime isn't actually out yet but watching the trailers for Kyoukai no Kanata, it looks really interesting and I love the main character's design - Mirai Kuriyama.

She uses a sword made from crystallized blood and in one of the trailers you can see it's faintly transparent. I looked up ways to make a transparent blade and the best way I can find with my limited supplies - I'm an uni with no access to any kind of saws or drills - is making the blade out of perspex and using the scoring-and-snapping method.

But I can't seem to find a way to dye or colour perspex and the blade is about a metre long - and a square metre of dark red perspex is about £60. I could possibly save up for that but it would take a very long time and I was wondering if anyone knew of any cheaper methods of making a transparent blade of that size and colour.

The other thing is her uniform - I have NO experience sewing anything ever - apart from Year 8 Textiles in which my teacher absolutely despaired of how bad I was - but I would like to try and make her uniform. But looking at sailor fuku tutorials none seem to have a good pattern for a long-sleeved top and the collar in Mirai's uniform is a completely different shape from other sailor fuku collars I've seen. In some pictures the top looks double-breasted but in others it looks like one piece of fabric with non-functional buttons added for decoration. The ribbon/trim on the bottom of her skirt intimidates me a bit, too, I've looked at pleated skirt tutorials but I don't know how I would be able to attach that. I have no idea how to do the cuffs, either. Can anyone help me find a good pattern/s for this? Possibly help me figure out the collar? Does anyone have any tips?

It would be also useful if anyone can point me in the direction of a fabric shop in the West Midlands near Coventry, preferable accessible by public transport.

Another thing is that I don't have a sewing machine and won't be able to afford one for a good while - is this out of my depth? If so I wouldn't mind getting some quotes on getting her main uniform commissioned if anyone who reads this does commissions.

Also, can anyone help me decide whether her cardigan is pink or brown/beige? It seems to change every five seconds and is a bit frustrating...

Trailers for the anime - 1 - 2 - 3

Thank you very much in advance!

I am not sure about what fabric stores are in Coventry, but if you can get to Birmingham we have the Fancy Silk Store (http://fancysilkstore.co.uk/ now has a new website!) which is three storeys of fabric and as well as that in the Birmingham Rag Market there's stalls where you can get fabrics from £1.00 a metre!

Thank you! Getting to Birmingham is pretty easy and that shop sounds fantastic and it's near the Bullring (I think) so hopefully it won't be difficult to find, either. Thank you very much!

polycarbinate is cheaper than perspex also i use a modeling saw and modeling knife i got from games workshop as for builing up a shape and coulouring would be messy but you could warm up hot glue and shape it onto the poly corbinate and mix in dye or if you wanna be super cheap ink from read pens to get the red colour.

Thank you! Do you know where I could get say a square metre of polycarbinate? I can't find it online. Also, do you think transparent red glass paint could possibly work for the colouring on the polycarbinate?

I've found some patterns that might work - can someone help me pick out a pattern that would be best?

I thought I could edit the collar patterns, add the buttons to the top and the cuffs - which as far as I can figure out are just rectangles with seam allowance? - and make the little flap of white fabric under the collar from the same material as the collar and cuffs.

I also tried to figure out a collar pattern? Obviously never done this before so no idea if it would work...can I have some advice please?
