Personally I don't think it matters much ^^ I have a tattoo on my right shoulder and several piercings (facial and navel) but I've never covered them up or taken them out, not even for my more innocent cosplays like Chii.

No one seemed to notice so I don't think it matters much ^^

I have no tattoos because I can't think of a single place where they wouldn't been seen if I were wearing a costume. Well, except the soles of my feet.

So yeah, I think it matters, but only to me. I don't care about what other people do. But that's my main stance on most cosplay things.

i have eternal sailor moon tattooed on my back and i don't mind showing it off when i am in sailor moon based costume

but with my upcoming iris from atelier iris costume i shall be covering it in make-up for it just for the fact i don't think it'll fit.

but it's up to your prefence. my friend lisa who cosplayed sailor at amecon last year proudly showed off her tattoo.

I lovvvvve them!! I especially love it when people do costumes that suit their tattoos/piercing whatever and make a feature of it! Even so, I always removed my lip piercings for costumes when I had them!? (So: don't mind for others, but hide my own, haha.)

But don't worry! I honestly think with all these posts about height/weight/whatever and cosplay it's mainly the people who don't cosplay have problems expecting people to look like exactly the cartoon character rather than real human people. XD

I have two, the one on my leg is normaly covered anyway but the one on my arm is quite large and can only be covered with long sleaves;
I personaly wouldn't bother covering them up (unless they were covered anyway by my clothing), I don't take out my piercings either.

I had one of them fully exposed for pyramid head last year and no-one cared.

I have no piercings to worry about (allergic reactions to most metal used in piercings. Not pretty reactions either. I can't even wear earrings) so that's no problem for me. I have a small tattoo on my back, it's hidden in most costumes but one or two it cab be visible, either through material or due to lack of coverage. No one ever called me out about it.

I think it's your personal preference. If you're doing this just for fun, then I don't see the point in freaking about tattoos and piercings. But if you're determined to be as accurate as possible, and try to win everytime then it's something to consider.

Simple fact is it's at your discretion if you remove piercings and cover tattoos. Most people in cosplay amre easy going about it. It's just the uber cocky and inconsiderate people who take cosplay as very srs biznis that will call you out on it and make it a big deal.

Theres a good chance you are the same as me and have a severe nickel allergy. I didn't know about it till I explaned how I reacted to the piercer when I got my first set done.
I can wear titanium, niobium and rhodium with no problem (they are so innert its almost impossible to be allergic to them), but anything else I could only have in for maybe 10/20 mins before I got a reaction.

I always take my piercings out except for my cuff (mainly because it's the only one I actually paid for, and I don't want to have to shell out again. XD). I only have a little bar in there, though, and I don't think I've ever done a costume that doesn't have the wig covering it.

And the only reason I haven't had my tattoo done yet is because I'm not sure where to put it. I originally wanted it behind my ear on my neck, but I don't know how easy that will be to cover. The other place I might have it done is my wrist, but that's even worse! XD

I think that unless someone has a huge collection of tattoos it really gets in the way of a costume. Especially a small one that can't really be seen. I quite like seeing what other people have got as well. ^^

I've got too many piercings to bother taking out, also I'm not too worried about covering my tattoos as most of my tats can be covered easily anyway. You can always buy stage make-up to cover most tattoos.

I guess it really depends on how concerned you are about accuracy. Personally I wont be cosplaying my whole life so my tattoos mean more to me than my costumes ever will.

I don't really mind, and I definitely wouldn't critisize anyone for it. Personally I would cover tattoos up if I had any (which I don't anyway), and I usually don't wear earrings anyways so no problem there. But I don't think it matters unless you want it to matter XD

I'm also like this. I really want a tattoo, but one of the things that's holding me back is actually my cosplays and the fact that it can't be properly hidden in all cosplays. I've got just a few piercings (will probably get more soon XD), I take those out, or put smaller, almost invisible, studs (or what ever it's called) in when cosplaying. But that's me and my obsession with being accurate. What others do doesn't matter to me. If their cosplay look good I don't care if there are tattoos and piercings that "shouldn't" be there. I'd still admire the cosplay and cosplayer ^___^ And as said above, if there are piercings or tattoos that suits the cosplay, then that's awesome!

By and large, I never mind.. but there are tattoos or piercings which can spoil an otherwise great costume if they stick out.. Only usually the larger ones, as a photographer if I don't know the character it's also very hard to tell if they should have it - in which case they probably spent a lot of time on it and want it prominent in the photo so I should focus on it - or they just haven't covered it, and I should be doing my best to make it as un-obvious in the photo as possible

Piercings in general, I mean I understand that some can be a real pain to take out, but there's always that impression people get that they're easy to remove and not doing so for a character that doesn't have them is pretty lazy..

Dunno

Forgot to mention that you can buy retainers for piercings if you are worried about taking them out, although they shouldn't bee worn for too long.

07 Mar 2009 - 22:5211452
I'm also one of those people who want a tattoo but are afraid to due to cosplay. It would just be on my upper left arm but it would be a nuisance if I had a sleeveless outfit.
Tattoos look okay on cosplays anyway especially if it goes with the theme. I don't imagine one of those weird totally tattooed arms looking too great though. XD

I think you mean a sleeve?

Way I see it, if you're worried about getting a tattoo because of cosplay then you shouldn't be getting one. They should be more personal than "Oh noes I can't get a tattoo (generic anime character 1) hasn't got one there"

I have 7 and some of them can be seen depending on the costume. I have one on each wrist, another on my lower-inner arm, one of my stomach, and 3 on my upper arms, which are only visable if I'm cosplaying Dark or ANBU Itachi. I'm not particularly bothered with covering up, although I'm a little concerned with one of them. It's the ANBU tattoo and I'm just a little nervous that someone will come up to me and say something like "OMG it's on the wrong arm" lol (it's a naruto thing, I'll explain anyway. male ANBU's have the tattoo on their left arm, the women have theirs on their right. I have mine on my right arm but am going to cosplay a guy ANBU. the only reason it's on my right arm is a) i'm a girl, and b) the tattoo on my left arm was done long before I decided to have the ANBU one)
The only time I take out my peircings tho is with my Orochimaru cosplay, and that's only because wearing the nose ring while applying make up is a pain, and putting it back in afterwards makes some of the makeup go into the hole D:

I personally don't think it's much of a problem with cosplays. It's your life, if you really want a tattoo or peircing then go for it, cosplaying is pretty much a hobby and shouldn't stop you from getting something you want. Sure some people can get serious about cosplaying and like to be accurate (i get like that sometimes) but in the end, it's up to you.

I really want a tattoo on my chest like the pattern on the flower cards chest or forehead (ccsakura) :3 i think it'll look cute when i'm cosplaying Tsunade ^^;

I have my ears pierced, but I usually try and wear character-appropriate earrings, rather than leaving them out totally! So I have little crucifixes for Sister Noelle and Sister Kate, pink flowers for Mikuru, etc.

I think it's quite nice to use them as another accessory for the character, like choosing a bag or a necklace that matches/suits what you're cosplaying!

That's a really cute idea. I might try that for Sakura. ^^ Don't think it'd work for any of my crossplays though. XD I always imagine boys with studs if I imagine them with any sort of piercings, which is what I wear anyway.

I think it can look really cool, but also if you feel it's better to cover them up, that's ok too.
I took out all my piercings the first time I did Gaara, as his skin's meant to be unpiercable/unharmable etc. But then I left them in the next time around because I liked him looking punkier, and it turned out a lot of other people did too
It really is up to you

09 Mar 2009 - 11:5311505
I think tattoos can sometimes enhance the coolness of an outfit for example they wouldnt look out of place on zells arm/general body. I suppose everything in moderation. Though if your going for absolute mega-digi-nove-boom acurracy then some might take uppance ^.-

I have 5 tattoos and 8 ear piercings, and tbh I dont really feel the need to hide them. Although I do like to do things as close as I can to the character, I feel that its always nice to keep a bit of "myself" in it.

I mean, for a cosplay I had miiol DRAW fake tattooes on for me ;D.

I dont see a problem with it myself.
