Costume survey
Costume survey.
Hello! I am currently carrying out research for my A2 Textiles project for which I am planning to design costumes for a sci-fi film. For this I need to find out how people respond to costumes and what can trigger ideas about characters from them. If it would be possible for you to quickly fill in this survey about some selected film costumes I would be very grateful. Please write as much or little as you like. (you don’t have to do all of them, pick and chose the ones you like)

Myself I can't!

What is your personal opinion on the look of the character?
It is a little boring for my tastes, he looks very plain.

Probably not a very nice guy! Maybe quiet and powerful.

Can you also tell anything about the situation that the character is in from their look?
Very old maybe, been in a lot of fights. The cape looks well worn.

I like this design, looks like a good fantasy villain.

Interestingly I've seen some of those films, and the pics chosen aren't necesarily representative of what I know about the character.

1: David from Prometheus
What are your first impressions of the character from their look? He looks like an arrogant jerk
What do you pick up about the personality of the character from how they look? The grimace makes it look like he doesn't want to be there. The tilted head makes me think he doesn't like whoever made him pose for the photo.
Can you also tell anything about the situation that the character is in from their look? Looks like he works in an office, but there's a few fashion aspects that clearly are not contemporary.
What is your personal opinion on the look of the character? Looks boring. Nothing to pique my interest.

2: Victor Frankenstein
What are your first impressions of the character from their look? He looks very serious. And concerned
What do you pick up about the personality of the character from how they look? Very haughty. Sees himself as better than his peers.
Can you also tell anything about the situation that the character is in from their look? The apron and paraphenalia suggest a laboratory. It looks like we've interupted him and he's annoyed by the disturbance.
What is your personal opinion on the look of the character? Looks old fashioned. The collarless shirt and cravat are from an earlier time.

3: Witch King from Lord of the rings
What are your first impressions of the character from their look? Ancient evil!
What do you pick up about the personality of the character from how they look? There's no visible expression, but the posing suggests he's not afraid, or concerned
Can you also tell anything about the situation that the character is in from their look? Look's like he's about to gloat or mock some heroes before their inevitible death.
What is your personal opinion on the look of the character? The helmet spikes seem superfluous, but I like the combination of armour and decaying robes. It speaks of former glory.

4: Lara Croft from Tomb Raider
What are your first impressions of the character from their look? She's only playing at being an action hero.
What do you pick up about the personality of the character from how they look? She doesn't look nearly as confident as she's trying to be.
Can you also tell anything about the situation that the character is in from their look? Looks like she's posing for a photo shoot. There's nothing here that shows she knows what she's doing with those guns.
What is your personal opinion on the look of the character? I don't like it. The belt is resting wrong, and looks like it would move about and cause bruises if she runs. Plus the top looks unsupportive for an action heroine

5: CAptain Kirk
What are your first impressions of the character from their look? He looks like he's realisd he's out of his depth
What do you pick up about the personality of the character from how they look? He's unsure of himself. Maybe he's new to field work.
Can you also tell anything about the situation that the character is in from their look? Wherever he is, he's just arrived and is in danger.
What is your personal opinion on the look of the character? I like the bold use of colour, and the simplicty of design.

Hope this helps ^_^ Its a little difficult since ive seen all these films but ive tried my best =)

Character 1 - David

What are your first impressions of the character from their look?
A followerer rather than a leader, very stiff militastic body language. Dull colour clothes

What do you pick up about the personality of the character from how they look?
Very stiff, prime and proper. Body language suggests very militant, robetic, cold. Hes looking off camera, suggesting distance from the viewer, uninterested or prehaps deep thinker.

Can you also tell anything about the situation that the character is in from their look?
Looks to me like hes either on military duty, IE: Very stiff at attention or possably pyjamas?- rudely awoken from sleep explaining blank expression

What is your personal opinion on the look of the character?
Appearance wise i think David looks abit dull, very plain boring colours and not much of an expression on his face.

Character 2 - Victor Frankenstein
What are your first impressions of the character from their look?
Scientist, black and white setting and expression makes you think some kind of thriller story or horror

I will do the rest for you when i have more time ^_^

Costume number: 1 David
What are your first impressions of the character from their look?
Very formal, strict perhaps. Follows the rules, perhaps even implements them.

What do you pick up about the personality of the character from how they look?
His top button is done up, even though he's not wearing a tie, so this shows to me he's really into looking smart/tidy - to a point in which it can look silly.
It's clean and neat, there's no damage to it so he's delicate with his appearance.
I think he's gotta be dull, strict and obedient; I think he's also intelligent.
His hair is styled, but in a formal/plain way - but it could be even more plain, so he's not entirely brainless.

Can you also tell anything about the situation that the character is in from their look?
Not a whole lot. I think his clothing is a uniform of some sort, but there's no marking to indicate what kind of service he is in.

What is your personal opinion on the look of the character?
I think it's clean and well presented. Like I mentioned, he's formal to a silly degree - but it could work depending on the character.

Costume number: 2 Frankenstein
What are your first impressions of the character from their look?

Another intelligent guy. From an earlier period for sure. Serious and hard.

What do you pick up about the personality of the character from how they look?
Under his apron he's wearing full period get-up, which suggests he's proud in his appearance - he's wearing even his tie while experimenting.
His eyes and brows suggest a fierceness / harsh intelligence. Apron suggests he has some care for his clothing.

Can you also tell anything about the situation that the character is in from their look?
He hasn't rolled up his sleeves, so perhaps he has money to replace a shirt damaged during experimentation? Definitely well off as he has time to frolic in a laboratory, unless it's his job - but I think he'd be more ragged if it was a full time thing. He comes away from the lab, or he wouldn't care so much for appearances.

What is your personal opinion on the look of the character?
He looks very dapper; a perfect gentlemen I don't think a shirt, tie and waistcoat is fantastic lab wear, though!

Costume number: 3 Witch King
What are your first impressions of the character from their look?

Very menacing, not a guy I'd want to meet on a dark night. Ragged and aged.

What do you pick up about the personality of the character from how they look?
There's not a whole lot of personality there. Just a feeling of evil and anger.

Can you also tell anything about the situation that the character is in from their look?
It's old for sure. Battle worn and aged by time.

What is your personal opinion on the look of the character?
I love it. I'm a huge fan of weathered and torn fabrics, especially layers of it in different shades. He definitely has a villain look.

Costume number: 4 Lara Croft
What are your first impressions of the character from their look?

She think's she's a badass. It's quite boring, to be honest.

What do you pick up about the personality of the character from how they look?
She thinks she's ready for action. Also very prissy as her hair is perfect - although it's a relatively sensible hair style. She's confident in wearing little

Can you also tell anything about the situation that the character is in from their look?
She's got guns and holsters, so active and dangerous?

What is your personal opinion on the look of the character?
Considering her job, I think her outfit is useless. With the constant threat of being cut by rocks or whatever when she's exploring she should cover more skin and wear a thicker fabric that will actually protect her! XD But of course, Tomb Raider outfit's aren't really about practicability!
Knowledge aside, I think it's plain and not very exciting. It doesn't leave a whole lot to the imagination and could use something extra.

Costume number: 5. Kirk
What are your first impressions of the character from their look?

Uniformed so doesn't give much on his own style. Quite plain. Horrid colour XD

What do you pick up about the personality of the character from how they look?
Uniformed so doesn't give much on his own style. The hair suggests some attempt at individuality.

Can you also tell anything about the situation that the character is in from their look?
Not a whole lot. There's a similar uniform next to him, but different color - so perhaps rank or just choice.

What is your personal opinion on the look of the character?
It's very classic. Not very exciting but does the job and is very recognizable.

It's no problem at all. It actually made this more interesting. I had to focus on what was visible in the picture rather than what I knew about the character.

Costume number: 1 ( not seen this film so don’t know the character )

What are your first impressions of the character from their look?
Looks very formal and seems to be wearing smart-casual work clothing.

What do you pick up about the personality of the character from how they look?
His body language is very rigid, alert and confident. He looks like he’s waiting to follow orders and would carry them out to the best of his ability.

Can you also tell anything about the situation that the character is in from their look?
Only that he looks like he works assisting his higher-ups in an office or some kind of position with responsibility. I know that it’s a sci-fi film but I can’t tell that from his design ( only noticed the text mentioning robots afterwards because the writing was tiny ). I assume he could have been given a plain smart-casual outfit so that they could make him look human while being denied much individuality since he might possibly be one of many robots.

What is your personal opinion on the look of the character?
His outfit is very bland and not very memorable. I think that you can tell the most about his character from his body language and his outfit only really tells you that he has some kind of formal job. An outfit doesn’t have to be overly colourful or detailed to be memorable as simple designs can work really well, but if they could add a distinctive detail or two such as some kind of logo patch showing who he works for, or something indicating his rank or a clip-on ID card then he would look more recognisable as being a specific character rather than a random person. Using a couple of contrasting colours or an accent colour in the outfit design would also help a lot ( again they don’t necessarily have to be bright colours if it’s for a serious character, just contrasting colours or shades ).

Costume number: 2 ( know of it but haven’t watched it )

What are your first impressions of the character from their look?
Looks intelligent, formal, serious and old-fashioned. The items he’s holding make it clear that he works in science.

What do you pick up about the personality of the character from how they look?
His expression shows that he’s serious about his work and experiments. His outfit and hairstyle are smart and formal which makes him look dignified, possibly posh.

Can you also tell anything about the situation that the character is in from their look?
The props make it obvious that he works in science, though I don’t think that I would be able to tell his situation from his clothing alone other than the story being set in an old-fashioned era and that he seems to be within a good level of society.

What is your personal opinion on the look of the character?
I think that it suits the role of his character and the story’s setting. The contrast of white and black in his outfit stands out nicely in a greyscale film. It could maybe have had something a little more slightly unique to it since a lot of people would have worn similar clothing in that time and social class, though at the same time that is why it’s a suitable design.

Costume number: 3 ( watched at least the first 2 films, don’t remember them that clearly )

What are your first impressions of the character from their look?
Looks menacing, dangerous, ancient and mysterious and from a fantasy setting.

What do you pick up about the personality of the character from how they look?
Looks like a creature that acts on instinct and cannot be reasoned or spoken with. It appears to be very imposing and dangerous. Obscuring the figure of the character and showing simply a black void or shadows where the face would be gives it a very mysterious and menacing feel and gives a fear of the unknown.

Can you also tell anything about the situation that the character is in from their look?
From the sword in it’s hand and the helmet design around the hood it looks to be ready for battle. It could be hunting someone or it could be guarding something important.

What is your personal opinion on the look of the character?
It doesn’t appeal to me that much personally since I don’t tend to be that keen on rustic designs with very muted, earthy colours since I don’t find them very memorable. But the design does succeed at being very imposing and mysterious and fits with it’s setting.

Costume number: 4 ( watched it and played some of the games )

What are your first impressions of the character from their look?
Confident, strong and sexualised action character.

What do you pick up about the personality of the character from how they look?
She has a very confident stance whilst her expression is wary to show she’ll be strong yet cautious in action situations. Her top is very tight and her shorts quite short to show more of her legs and heighten the character’s sexuality rather than focusing on practicality and protection.

Can you also tell anything about the situation that the character is in from their look?
The gun holsters show that she has experience with guns and that she will find herself in dangerous situations where she will need to use them.

What is your personal opinion on the look of the character?
I think that the light blue of Lara’s original top gave her outfit design something that made it more memorable and distinctive to her specific character. If we didn’t already associate this general hairstyle and vest and shorts combination with her character so much then I don’t think that this outfit would be that interesting since it’s just all plain black and doesn’t have any kind of secondary colour or imagery to it. I guess that the dark colour choice was probably to make her character seem more gritty. Maybe something extra could also be added to this design to make it more obvious that she’s an explorer such as a small backpack.

Costume number: 5 ( seen the odd episode very occasionally a long time ago )

What are your first impressions of the character from their look?
Smart-casual clothing and neat appearance. Looks anxious.

What do you pick up about the personality of the character from how they look?
His expression is anxious and wary. He has his weapon ready to use against a possible threat though he seems to be holding it in a relaxed manner rather than really aiming it.

Can you also tell anything about the situation that the character is in from their look?
The matching outfit designs of he and his colleague show that they are part of the same organisation, but the differing colours used show that they work in different roles.

What is your personal opinion on the look of the character?
It’s a very memorable and recognisable design. The outfits are very simple but the logo and simple bit of detail on the sleeve make them obviously specific to and associated with their particular group, while the colour-coding is an effective way of dividing the crew into sub-groups. Perhaps they could have added something extra to Kirk’s design to show his position as Captain since it isn’t very obvious that his shirt colour is unique when he is stood next to only one other character. The centre of the logos appear to be different to maybe signify this but aren’t very clear. And perhaps the shade of his shirt could have been muted down a bit or exchanged for a different colour since his comes across as being too vivid.
