Heroes of Cosplay
Not sure if anyone's heard about this. Sy-Fy (or Sci-Fi as it should be...) have mad this series called Heroes of cosplay in the US. It follows a couple cosplayers as they make costumes, I think, for WCS selections.

Trailer:

I'm not sure how what to think about this. It's nice to see cosplay getting this kind of exposure. Really showing what goes into a costume and what we all feel. On the other hand, I'm a little off about how it will be done. Dick producer editing the show to make people appear a certain way.

What you guys of this?

The general consensus from my friends (did a status on it a few weeks back when I spotted it myself) is that it's probably going to be some sort of choreographed car crash or *the Yaya Han show* either of which probably won't be particularly beneficial to cosplay's reputation.

I'm glad they have what seem to be pretty good cosplayers on there, so it might not be too bad. A list of names etc. is here, in case people want to know: http://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2013/07/08-1/syfy-channel-reveals-cast-of-cosplay-reality-competition.

I'm holding judgement for now and will watch it to see how it pans out, but I don't have particularly high hopes.

There are so many sides to cosplay, costume making and con culture.I hope this show doesn't just focus on competition. It could be quite a useful show really, I guess we'll have to watch it

The thing that bugs me is that there's no diversity? It looks like there's only one guy in the show and idk it seems like they really could have done better than that. I hope they don't just focus on the competitions. It's so much more than that.

I think the lack of diversity is just down to a "they took who they could get"
From what I've been reading on 4chan they asked LOTS of people in the states, but most had the sense to turn it down in fear of it being a ridiculing show.

I don't think it's as much the latter. I think if they were going to go that way it would be much more obvious. She wasn't exactly in the trailer that much. It's about 4/5 different people. The car crash on the other hand yeah is what I concerned about.

The one positive is that it's on Sy-Fy, I find it unlikely that they deliberately produce something that would basically humiliate and upset a large part of their core audience. We're not dealing with say FOX or someone like that.

With 4chan, you have take everything more salt than the human body can handle. Trolls, idiots, and just plain bitchyness can really obscure what's really happening.

I would like to check it out if ever hits over here. Of course the US scene is a bit different to here.

No, but Syfy are co-producing the show with 51 Minds Entertainment, owned by Endemol, responsible for Big Brother and snog marry avoid, as well as "The Tester". So... perhaps?

Oh I am well aware! I'm not exactly new to it, I'm afraid. But on this occasion I can't see many reasons for lying / there are the odd civil threads.

It hits the states on 27th August so not long now!

Ah I see. Point taken. Hopefully, might exercise enough control on it so it isn't complete freakshow.

The Tester... So bad. You can only watch that with some MST3K style commentry... The things with it is that Sony wasn't using to find any useful staff, it was an over produced advertising vehicle. Not a very subtle one at that.

Well here's a little write up about the first ep.

https://www.facebook.com/notes/dj-spider-cosplay-and-costuming/heroes-of-cosplay-episode-i-a-phantom-menace/490403547711947

Seems pretty fair I guess. Shame about the shitty editing.

I have about as much faith in this programme having a fair portrayal on cosplay as The Sun

Producers, what do they know about anything?

I think there's a bit of overreaction to this statement though...

I think this is a pretty fair review.
I agree with the down point of only one guy. I think there's many types of male cosplayers, and this guy whose only really just getting in to it isn't the best representation.
Yaya's *cosplay ambassador* rubbish is getting annoying, tbh.
With the Merida wig - pretty sure there are faster ways to do that, so that was a bit like "... really?"
Also, you do noooot need 5 people to do a headcast ._.;

I can see what you mean by that. She's been around longer than alot of people and have managed to make a name for herself doing it. In America at least Her's is probably the first name that gets mentioned by a lot of people when asked for a 'big name'. To her credit, she doesn't seem to have a big head about it. She seems to take on projects like this and the PBS documentary because she loves what she does.

Admittedly, it might still take a while for others to make a similar name for themselves.

I totally understand why people respect her, I mean wow she's made cosplay into her livelihood and she clearly puts a lot of work into her costumes.
I just don't think the show is portraying everything in the right light. All the contestants seem to be concerned about is her opinion, how they look in comparison to her, gaining her respect and so on, and I just don't think that is, you know, what we should be focusing on in the show - cosplay is much more than sucking up and competition, and I think they've completely missed the point on a lot of things.

Of course, I'm not a competitor - nor am I in the American scene, this is just my views on it.

I just watched the first episode of this today and.... I can't help but say all of them seemed a bit... quircky?? Not to be mean or anything, and I guess being a bit nerdy maybe does that to you. But the D&D girls seemed like all they did was fight/pick at each other.. Especially the redhead, never seemed to have fun or smile.

The victoia girl was so crazy and manipulative to her boyfriend?? I don't understand how he stayed so calm. When he sayed the machine broke, she basically blamed him for it (that's what it sounded like) and then he even stayed behind to finis her stuff, but in the end she didn't even finish it wtf..

I thought the girl who did Merida was okay, although i'm personally a bit weirded out by people who go that far into character..

The guy who made the fallout costume seemed the most normal and sweet?

I find it a bit strange that all they show on this show is the competing. Because that's not what it's all about (maybe for a small group of cosplayers?.. )
I've been cosplaying for years and never once entered a competition.. i think it would've been better if they also showed people who just do it for the fun aspect? I dunno.

just my two cents!
Also, who do you guys think would be on the show if they'd make a UK version of this? I'm not even sure I could name any 'famous' UK cosplayers...

In response to the main part of your post - and as to why Holly may be nicer out of the show - the show is more than likely scripted. While they are using their own names and identities, they have been given a role of some sort - alike to TOWIE and such things, only a little less obvious with the intent of creating drama and such.

As for the UK thing, there are talkings of E4, amongst others, approaching cosplayers specifically. So it might not be far off :c As for who, probably the same people who claim to be "cosplay famous"/"a professional cosplayer" in the UK; and are yet to realise it's not really a thing over here XD

Anyone with more ego/ambition than common sense? Or someone naive enough to think they have control over how the editor protrays them?

I'd hope that rules out people like our Eurocosplay finalists (past and present), but we all have our weaknesses.
