Cosplayer business cards - yes or no?
Not sure if this is the right forum to post in, but never mind...

I was wondering what the general opinion is on cosplayer business cards. I know a lot of photographers have business cards and I've seen recently cosplayers handing out business cards, too.

I haven't considered making myself cards, because I'm not really a cosplayer - I cannot sew to save my life and whilst I do make my own props and accessories when I can, and I am learning to sew, I commission/buy/edit existing clothes so I end up with a good-quality costume instead of fraying everywhere and dodgy seams.

But I do take pride in my costumes, because everything I do make, wigs I style etc., I put a lot of hard work into, and to get to the point (I'm not here to talk about myself), I'm sure everyone knows that it's very disappointing when you go to a con, get lots of pictures taken and then can't find a single one online and you end up with not very many nice pictures of your lovely costume (unless you can organise a photoshoot, which not everyone can do). The mad rush to go through all the facebook pages, website tags trying to find photos is difficult! And so cosplayer business cards would make it a LOT easier to find nice photos.

What's the general opinion on cosplayer business cards? Some people I think find them uppity or vain, whereas others just think they are useful or good for commissioners etc. What's your opinion?

I have no problem with them. They can be nice to keep as a contact point for people you've befriended at a con.

I love when photographers have them. Makes me less concerned about where my photo is going to end up

I haven't met a cosplayer using them, but it seems a good idea. It's nice to put a name to a face when you are uploading the pics. And it allows you to keep in contact with people you met.

I like the idea. Sometimes you meet some awesome people at cons and it's an absolute bugger to find them afterwards. A nice little card to refer to could be great.

I think its a double edged sword really - all depends on what you use them for

You can use them for when you meet new friends and buddies and you wanna stay in touch, its a darn sight easier than trying to talk through your facebook url whilst they struggle to note it down on their phone lol

I've known instances when cosplayers have handed people a card of them when they've taken a passing picture of them and, although it shouldn't, it just comes off a bit big headed if you know what i mean?

but i'd never say no one should use them its just HOW you use them =D

I actually think they're great! I don't see them done much here in the UK but whenever I go to Japan Expo in Paris - quite a few people have them and it's a really great way of keeping in contact with people. I think more people need them especially at bigger events and for international competitions.

For smaller conventions in the UK, I find that a lot of people know each other already so there's not much point in them. However don't let that stop you as every now and then I've shot random cosplayers or photographers have come up to me I've never seen before and at that point I really wish I had a business card on me!

Every time I go to Japan Expo I keep thinking I need to finally make one. But then I never expect to go to the next one so it's always too late by the time I've decided I want to go as it gets to exam season or whatever... XD;

tl;dr - I like them and I think more people, cosplayers and photographers, should have them.

Thanks! This is really interesting to read.

I think if I myself ever wanted to make them I would save them for the people who look like they could be professional photographers - the guys with the gear, who aren't cosplaying maybe, because they are maybe more likely to take the better photos that you really want to see.

I think it's also interesting to say I think once or maybe twice I've had a photographer ask me if I had a business card, or for my email address! Very flattering!

I'm glad people think they're useful

They're also great for giving to fellow cosplayers. I've got a few business cards from cosplayers just because they've been great to chat with and it's an instant way of getting; 1) a pretty reminder of who you just talked to; 2) their social networking details. I just think overall it's a really good idea so long as you're not dishing them out to every single person you encounter in passing, that's a bit ridiculous and unwanted.

I also kinda like them because each person always has a different design. It's great to see how they present themselves on a little piece of card!
