Would you cosplay a character you hated?
I know some people cosplay as character they don't know, because they fall in love with the costume. And I've personally cosplayed as a character I liked, but wasn't my first choice, to help fill out a group.

But would you cosplay as a character you despised? Are there any circumstances that would change your position on this?

No ulterior motive or survey here, I'm just curious based on things I've spoken to people about. And I'm more interested in the thought process than the actual answer

Personally I wouldn't cosplay someone I disliked as I cosplay to advertise my love for a character. But I would consider costuming as a villain I loved to hate. I can appreciate a good bad-guy!

Personally, probably not. I possibly would if it was the only character missing from a group my friends were doing, and I've cosplayed a few characters I don't know about, so one could be one I'd hate if I knew about them. Generally though I'll stick to characters I like. I think the main thing stopping me isn't that I hate them though, rather that there're too many characters I really want to cosplay (either becuase I love the character or the outfit) that I just wouldn't bother.

I wouldn't cosplay a character I actively dislike, just because I don't think I would enjoy being them. I like to roleplay a little in costume, which would be hard to do with someone I didn't like. Also cosplay is good for meeting people who like the same things and I can imagine this would be hard if you don't like the character you're dressed as.

All that being said I might cosplay a character who I was lukewarm about- either to fill a group or because I like the costume. Oh and there are definitely some characters I love to hate that I'd consider but thats not the same as out and out hatred!

I've found this a problem when only half way through a series.

I found a brilliant character to add to my list. A rarely-cosplayed character from a popular series, nearer to my age and physique than the rest of the young and pretty cast. And the costume itself looked well within my skills.

Then I watched a few more episodes and found out he was a fraud, an alcoholic and a wife-beater

I dropped that idea like a hot potato!

I was only really thinking about characters you knew you disliked. I hadn't considered characters you don't know at all XD

Heh, well akin to your alcoholic character, I've cosplayed a character and then found out more about them and promptly got rid of the costume

Oh, something I didn't think of earlier - a worse one for me is stopping my partner from cosplaying characters I don't like (and which I assume he won't like either) XD. Mainly as we're planning a Game of Thrones group, and I've read the books where he hasn't, I've been trying to steer him away from all the unlikeable characters without spoiling the plot. He's had to do the same to me with various game characters where I haven't finished the game/series yet ^_^'

I just wouldn't enjoy making the costume if I didn't like the character!

20 Jun 2013 - 15:06104298
I think I would. I'm planning on cosplaying some characters that I'm not very keen on but only because as i have watched the series or played the game I have fallen in love with the outfit. These are not easy outfits you could just buy anywhere. To have a decent one you would have to make it yourself, and I think that's what made me want to cosplay the character. It's the fact that I will really enjoy making the cosplay and feel great accomplishment when I complete it.

Also I am very unlike to cosplay my favorite character from my favorite series as if I don't do it justice then I will not be happy with myself and be annoyed at myself for ages and probably will not want to wear it again.

I don't think I would cosplay a character i knew nothing about. I've looked at characters and thought wow I would love to cosplay that but after thinking that I've always watched the series first or played the games and than made my decisions then on whether i would actually do it.

(Me and my friends discuss these type of things a lot)

I can totally see why you'd feel that way. Sometimes I like characters who are horrible people but there are certain things where I'd actually find them quite hard to watch, one of these being someone who is abusive. So yeah, I can see whilst wearing the costume it would be hard to distance yourself from the stuff that made it uncomfortable to watch.

Even just having watched the series I can see that there's actually very few characters who aren't just awful people ! A few of them do fall more in to the love to hate than the out and out hate category.

Yeah. I didn't used to understand this, but having met people who cosplay for the costume rather than the character I can totally see it now.

The first costume I ever considered was a character I didn't know at the time. But I made sure I'd watched some episodes first, just to make sure, before I started planning properly.

I would as I am doing ^^; I really don't like Palkia and Dialga as far as legendary duos go, but i love the joy of putting a spin on costumes and enjoy a challenge of making it different ^^

So when my cosplay partner HowlingSilverWolf suggested we cosplay them, I didn't jump out my skin but I wasn't goin to say no as I thought it would be a fun challenge to find a new way of doing it (admittedly HowlingSilverWold did find my final gijinka design but thats cos she knows me too well! )

I don't think there's anything wrong with cosplay something you particularly don't like, as long as your not shouting from the rooftops that you don't like it as it may hurt or offend others. Take the cosplay in your stride and enjoy it for the company and crazy things that can be done, especially if u can put a new twist on it and put something a bit more you into something you wouldn't usually like ^^

I wouldn't say I'd cosplay a character I actually despised... rather dislike, or maybe very "meh" about them then yeah I probably would.

I guess one example would be Annie & Varus in League of Legends, I'm planning on cosplaying them both, I like their designs but their general playstyle I'm not greatly fond of if that counts?

I dunno, I think those are probably the exceptions i'd make...if I like a characters design ^^

21 Jun 2013 - 14:42104363
Yeah. Like I said in the OP I understood cosplaying as characters you're not completely in love with. I just hadn't met anyone who cosplayed somethey they actively disliked. But as Mew Rocky has proved, sometimes the love for a design/costume can outweigh the dislike for the character

Yay! Tibbers!

This is how I am with my League of Legends cosplay too! I love Tristana and play her as my main, but am going to cosplay as Caitlyn because I like her costume more (and it looks more fun to wear too!) I made sure that I bought her and play with her regularly though. Gotta do the research, right?

Most likely not.

Personally I'd prioritise on characters I actually like but if I am kinda meh about them then I might if I am filling for groups of friends and/or if it's fairly simple.

I'd love to do alot of cosplays so I tend to prioritise on what I would love to do these days, and love of the character comes before design.

I'd like to try a villain at some point. Not one I dislike, someone that interests me. Would be fun to try out different character types :3

Exactly! I'm more of a support player myself but I don't mind playing mid or AD carry...just both of their kits are very bland

My boyfriend is planning on having a big tibbers costume in October, haha!

I don't know if playstyle counts lol. There are loads of LoL characters I want to cosplays (think I'll just do one big LoL cosplay plan thing, then separate them as I do them) but I don't have that much of an emotional attachment to them.

As for me, no. I cannot physically be someone who I despise. Dahlia from Phoenix Wright, for example, I love her dress, it's so pretty. However, when I found out what she did and everything I was utterly repulsed by her and EVERYTHING she looked like. I essentially rejected her with every being of my body.

No way. I love Crash Bandicoot, but I don't like the redesigns.
If I were to cosplay as the redesigned CotT Crash Bandicoot it'd have to be for something else, like a video taking the mick.

Hehe, yeah I said that in my other comment ^^;

No,I probably wouldn't if I really hated them.

Although if I dislike (but not despise) them and their design is very aesthetically interesting I might!

I recently cosplayed a character I petty much hate (Juno from Assassin's Creed), and honestly, it was really fun. Because even if you don't like the character, you still like the series (or I'd hope you do, if you're cosplaying from it) and appreciate their role within it, and you can make it into a bit of a gag x'D like acting out the character in an exaggerated way, etc!

I mean, I suppose I at least liked her character-design, which made the making aspect fun, too. If I hated every aspect of her I'd never have done the cosplay. I certainly wouldn't cosplay someone if I also hated their design because... well, it'd be a bit of a waste of time and money, really 8'D

Depends, if I hate the character because they are such an amazing 'bad-guy' that I felt hatred towards them, then OF COURSE I would. I still LOVE good bad-guys! The character for me is still amazing and strong and full of emotion!
For example I hated KUSHANA and LADY EBOSHI when I first saw those films (Nausicaa and Mononoke) but now I'd love to cosaply them, same for Yubaba from Spirited Away.
Sure Studio Ghibli is a bad example as the characters can't be 100% hated as they aren't 100% evil. But if were a guy I'd cosplay Muska and he's a through and through bad guy!

I'd consider any of the Disney badies and well I'd love to make something like an angel from Evangelion!

For me 'hating' a character brings about my respect for that character.

If the character had done what I would consider VERY bad things (e.g rape) then no matter how strongly I felt about them I wouldn't cosplay them.

Some characters I hate because I find them to be bad characters, e.g weak, annoying, lack of personality etc, I'd never consider one of those unless I really loved the series/game/film they came from.

Agreed! Maybe I should have been more clear with my original post

You're talking about the villains I meant by "love to hate". A really good, evil, scenery-chewing, sneering, despicible pantomime baddie is a heck of a lot of fun to cosplay as! (I've got Disney's Hook, and Oban's General Kross on my to do list!)

I also agree that there are some things that a character can do, that would mean I could never cosplay as them, no matter how much I like them.

Ooh ooh ooh! I think I know what character you're talking about! He's from that show with those characters that are "animals" right? (trying not to spoil people like you were trying to as well lololol)

In terms of cosplaying characters I dislike...I don't think I've ever hated anyone I've cosplayed in the past. I cosplayed Dilandau, who's just incredibly insane and part of me is like ERM OK but I still enjoyed cosplaying him! XD

I'm planning to cosplay Sheryl Nome in the future from Macross Frontier, CrystalNeko can be my witness that I really didn't like her when watching it the first time round, because I was a Ranka fangirl XDDD; buuut time has passed and I've warmed up to her more (I still want to do Ranka at some point though as well but atm Sheryl suits me more OTL)

What made you overcome the annoyingness? Was it an amazing outfit that you just had to wear? Or did you do it to join in with a group or something?
