OK, so I have a working title and a basic plot (and I may have recruited a few people for a crew, possibly).

I've designed and started accumulating items for Rhodopis who is a "Coin-Operated Companion". I'm going to start simple, mainly because carting large things to AX is not one, but partly to work my way up.

@Fables: I love the coat (also props for the reference). I like GunstarVixen's idea of a tea strainer. Also second the opinion about a notebook and quill. Maybe a lot of litle bags/fancy pouches attached to a belt with tea-stained/aged paper tags with different names of tea, fancy sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg, cocoa, etc written on them? A leather-look messenger bag'd do you nicely methinks. How about getting a bunch of plastic spoons and fancying them up with airdrying clay, then spraying them silver? You could either make a necklace/bracelet or another belt (worn crossed over) out of them.

A pocket watch is a must, so that she knows exactly when a lady should stop her activities and take tea. It doesn't have to cost much either (and you can make it quirky by putting words like "time for tea", "afternoon tea", "high tea", etc on it). This isn't the best example as I actually made it when I was 15-ish and it had to be readable by the audience whilst I was onstage, but Mr.Rabbit's watch was made out of a laghing cow cheese carton, a toothpaste lid and a bit of chain from a hardware store, papier macheed then painted with poster paint. It would be easy to make a better one; a split pin would allow you to add moving hands.

I'd say tie a scarf or nice ribbon around the top hat then put the goggles on top of that. Ooh, or intead of straight goggles, how about a goggle/opera glasses combo, just be a be a little more quirky? Maybe a couple of strings of beads (with a few cogs for good measure)? Also, if she's a lady into her tea, she should know the correct ettiquette and wear a little pair of gloves.

Awesome suggestions *puddings watch wins on all frequencies*

well apart from whats already said it really pays to invest in some DA DA DA DAAAA EBAY WATCH PARTS AND COGS!!! there really cheap (usually you aint paing more than about 3-10 pounds a tin/box whatever) they are so useful as they pretty much steampunk any prop or item of clothing

the belt idea is good to as in having a couple of pouches ^.^ they not only look good but they are usefull at cons *money/id ect)

The crossbow idea is awesome!!! and I would highly reccomend a Nerf crossbow as they are con safe and easy to mod. *most steampunks will suggest Nerf-mods for cons*

I would suggest this one as its only like a tenner and it has so much potential to customzie *suggest cogs/gears in the inlay of the butt of the bow*

well that was my tiny input, hope it helped in some way ^.^ everyone elses was so awesome really good ideas ^^

I might do. All really depends on whether I fly or take the train. A Prussian pickelhaube and a clockwork gatling gun is not good for suitcase weight limits when flying.

Hello again! ^^

Just had a good read through everyones suggestions and they're awesome! So thanks everyone :3

Hmmm to be honest Missytetra after reading your first post I did think was maybe a tiny bit hurtful, but after I read your "double post" I understood the point you were trying to get across so no harm done ^^,

I have come up with a tiny new design (which was mainly because it was so awesomely fun to draw) and I'm going to keep altering it with a few of the suggestions above eg. Gloves, LOTS of belts and various pouches! I've spoken to Ryukredapples since he knows a fair bit more about victorian fashion than I do, and he's also mentioned bustles and the like so I think my second attempt will come out looking alot better on the whole. Perhaps I'll post a tiny picture of my design on my profile for people to be the judge of

But anyway that was probably just a very long winded way of saying thanks alot to everyone who replied to my earlier post!!

Without a word of lie I just spent 15 minutes crying after getting back from college, I am so sorry if I hurt your feelings, it really wasn't my intention, I just guess I have to learn what I can and can't say to some people- I have a feeling if I'd have said it to your face you would have understood. Sorry.

I do think the addition of more historical elements and more details will make it look a lot more what I understand of Steampunk, and for an in progress you have some great elements to work with ^^ Let me know how it goes!

I THINK (only THINK mind...) that the Crew of the HMS Valkyrie might be making a showing at Fuyucon...fully updated and upgraded! Hell, some of us will be doing fully new characters...

But, I have said too much already...

Maggie started with the idea for the prop, and then slowly evolved from there. When I make a character I put a large emphasis on the colours they represent- originally maggie was going to be red and gold and be kinda badass and un-feeling. But then all the characters together gave off a more funny and dirty feel, so she had to be adapted. Someone hit on the idea of making her a bit crazy, then the idea for basing her off a magpie came. And then it was pretty easy from then because I had something I could copy as far as personality goes and made acting as her a lot easier.

For me I always start with the main prop the character has. And then I start to flesh out why they have that prop. The why usually fills in some blanks with their personality, you then get some motivation. The last thing I always make sure to do is add faults to the characters. Like Maggie is a vain bitch and an attension seeker. All of those together make her a very easy character to play because I know her so well.

I went the other way- I had two very formed characters, so I knew their personalities inside out, but the clothes I picture them wearing were fairly dull and not really suited to cosplay. Then I saw all the steam punk stuff and thought - I can work with that.

I don't know what people will think of them, as I haven't really gone for historical accuracy. I've just gone with things that work with the characters: for example, Amari has a skirt that doesn't come round the front to make it easier to kick people in the head, while Zephyr has a tricorn because at one point in the story he bemoans the fact he doesn't have an awesome hat.

There are some progress pictures up on my account, and I'll post some more later. Let me know what you think.

I'm trying my best to get Dr. Knight finished in time for Aya but she'll definitely be complete for Fuyu!

LOL Well plans have changed a great deal. Fuyucon's not really a Steampunking one for us I don't think ^_^' But Ayacon definitely is and I want Doctor Knight there!

Thanks muchly KhaosKreator and Alias for the tips!

I think what worries me most actually about this character is the historical accuracy part, which I know I shouldnt be so worried about since it's basically got a lot of "modern" or "future" like machines and stuff anyway, just running brass, cog and steam powered. Lol

Dr. Lucius F.Farrier is the character I have in mind. A brilliant minded Doctor and surgeon who has the unfortunate fear of germs. Ever since their recent discovery, Dr Farrier has more or less developed an unhealthy fear of them, wearing a gas mask at all times and rarely going outside of his own home/practice. Whenever he goes out, I can picture him wearing a home made back pack of canisters which contain a home made gas that he believes sterilises people (Not actually researched into what the substance will be called yet). He actually has a high rate of survival of people when in surgery because of how sanitary he keeps his home.

Both considered a miracle Doctor and an insane because of his strange behaviour.

Of course, if he were to be part of a steampunk crew, he'd have to be coaxed out somehow. lol He'd just be remarkably funny and get on the other crew's nerves.

That's my two cents at the moment, his actual dressage wil likely be set in the Mid Victorian era because it was 1860 when they discovered the germ, so it kinda fits in well like that. O-o

*Is rather worried might end up making him rather too Gothic in appearance* Even though I have seen Gothic Steampunk, and I'm trying not to. D: Things like this usually get me worried I'll be looked down upon if I dont get it "right" by other people's standards DX

That sounds like a brilliant character, I really like the concept and the quirkyness you can shove into it. Not quite my cup of tea though because I don't do over cleanly costumes. I just love adding scum too much.

If you're worried about him looking to goth try to avoid black if you can. A lot of goth things are based on victorian fashion, so you just have to go a step back to ensure it doesn't look like the updated goth versions. Avoid things which are more industrial like spikes and modern fabrics. Fabric choices can be a huge part of the character so think about what thickness they would be and the colour themes you want to use. Adding browns and colour to an outfit instead of black will ensure a more victorian feel.

That being said, you don't have to stick too time accuracy with steampunk. I mean, we had a goblin. A GOBLIN.

Steampunk is what you make of it, I think my main aim is to look cool, not follow what would be accurate.

I think that sounds fantastic DK! I know what you mean about avoiding seeming like a Victorian Goth, but like Tab said, avoiding black can be a good way to avoid that.

Choose fabrics that suit the time period and research what the medics wore back then. Also consider what kind of crew will be picking the doctor up, whether you'll then have to give it a military flare or a piratey flare etc.

All in all, I wouldn't worry about what anyone else thinks about it hun ^_^ If you want it to be accurate, some research on the net is all you really need. And that's if YOU want it to be accurate.

My story and my crew go for historical accuracy before we then give it our own flare, but that's just us. We know arcanepunks who base their costumes around magick etc. so it can go loads of differnet ways!

Thank ya muchly guys!

Yea, I do love the scummmy and dirty look that some characters have, but I thought that I would like to be a bit different and have him a bit too. XD He can still fit in "dirty" surrounding, since they'd just make him all the more fun~

And yes, I am very much trying to stay away from a completely black costume that's full of dark colours. At the most his Top hat is likely to be black(but will have manifying glasses and little trinkets on it) and his overcoat a dark grey and his pants, but that's about it. I'm obviously gonna mess around with a few designs and see if any other colours go with his pants.

I have actually been researching on the equipment he would carry about with him (some of which I didnt think they had back then and are hilarious!)

Have also looked at some actual doctors in Surgery, which are sadly black and white photos but have given me an idea on the style XD
