Foamboard as seen here isnt flexible and therefore wont bend unless the chest armour has a lot of flat planes that fix together, I'd definitely recommend looking into a product called Worbla. Coscraft stock it and so do other places, it's made pliable by heat and even if you mess up you can still correct it by reheating it, there are a lot of youtube videos demonstrating its many uses and you can put craft foam (the soft squishy stuff) in between two layers between it to bulk it up - you can build it up even without craft foam too.

specialist craft sell sculptable foam. you warm it for a few seconds then mold it around whatever you're working with. i've just got a load for something i'm working on. not tried it yet but it comes highly recommended... apparently! x

but yeah the foam board you've got has a solid top and bottom made from card and is for mounting art work onto so really isn't suitable x

EVA foam is very good for armour. I have made two armoured costumes using EVA foam and they've come out very well, it's very easy to work with too.

As fab foam is only about 2mm it can be used but you'd either need to layer it up a lot or your armour would be a bit flimsy.

I also agree with awesomeblossom, EVA foams great, all funky foam is is 2mm thick EVA foam, Thames Valley Supplies are awesome but as you say expensive.

EVA foam comes in many of different products so things like Yoga/camping mats are a less dense and cheap versions of EVA foam so you could just go to a shop and get them but they can also be a bit hard to shape as they aren't made to hold their shape so you'd need to design your armour to pull it in correctly.

Interlocking EVA foam mats are where it's at, they're inexpensive. Easy to cut as you can just use a sharp knife and you can just glue them with a glue gun. They've been used for Gears, Halo, Mass Effect, Iron man and plenty more different types of armours.

A nice video describing EVA foam tiles

I have been doing some research for my next cosplay challenge for some time. I have been considering EVA foam for the armour and had a quick look at this thread and this is rather handy. Ill look into it properly when I get the money to start Thanks guys ^^

Though I'm not really considering armour in the near future, those foam tiles look brilliant! One question, is there an easy way to make them flat? Those ones look like they have treadplate patterning.

They're perfectly smooth on one side but you always want to confirm that when purchasing them but all the ones I've experienced have been smooth but if you want both sides to be flat you could just sand it, they sand pretty well but getting both sides perfectly flat would be difficult but generally if you're doing armour the way the inside looks doesn't matter.

You can just see the texture in the inside of this boot
