Decided I need to mingle more!
So hey! :3
People call me chicken. (please, no questions)
Since I was 13 I have been so A LOT of expos and conventions, yet I've only started mingling with people that last few years.
I have my little con family that I talk to all the time and visit but I've never actually made an effort to talk to a lot more cosplayers and get their opinions on things, so i decided to start mingling.
I didn't really use my cosplay island much before but recently started really getting into looking at other peoples skills.
I just think it would be great to get to know you all xD

so HAY THAR!

Hey! Me being the old sod that i am (25) when i first started getting into anime/manga when i was 14, it was so appallingly difficult to get into stuff compared to now. the internet was so primitive in comparison. i remember trying to download clips from films/series and it taking 4 hours or more for a 2 minute clip on Napster of Orpheus and so having to save pocket money for months to go to Manchester and find shops that sold dvds. in that respect i feel i missed out on a lot hence me only getting into cosplaying the past couple of years.

i see so many people on here with big circles of friend who they meet up with. i don't feel i know anybody. when i was at mcm midlands this year i even took a picnic bag full of Japanese sweets and biscuits and goodies hoping i'd make friends...i didn't meet anyone lol

So basically what i'm saying is, i'm in the same position where i feel i'd like to get to know people better.

so HI!

Nonsense, loramarsdan, 25 does not make you an old sod at all. I totally missed Midlands expo but I'd have appreciated free Japanese goodies

Anyway Carmina here and I only really started getting in to anime when I sarted university in my late teens/ early twenties. I've amassed quite a collection since then. I've only been making costumes for a couple of years though and I think I'm gradually improving and getting the confidence to enter masquerades. I have my circle of friends which I've been gradually expanding as I've gained the confidence to talk to new people but I'm always eager to make new cosplay buddies.

Really I think its all about getting past those nerves, which can be easier said than done, and talking to people. I also find making friends is way easier at cons than expos, as the size means your more likely to bump in to the same people more than once. I definitely think the more people you talk to the more you get out of a con experience. I found this comparing my first Ame (although I still enjoyed it immensely), where I barely talked to anyone save the friend I came with, to the following one where I got involved in meets and the panels. But yeah if you guys are going to Ayacon this year I certainly wouldn't mind meeting up for a drink or something.

My problem is sort of the opposite lol Ihave people i talk to and can hang out with that I have known for years but it seems recently everyone seems to keep the fact that they are nerdy a secret and hidden. Even when at events!

I'll happily be your friend I can introduce you to a few people that i have known for a while

I've been into anime and manga my whole life but recently stopped watching it because I find it so hard to find the time to watch it when there is plenty of other things I need to do. Do you guys have the problem that you need to do stuff and can't watch anime because it is subbed and you can't multitask if watching it? because I do.
Although I have recently got back into gaming such great stories in games but again, not much time to game.

Yes I shall be at Aya and we should meet up have a little mingling party on the Thursday!

im sorry i got the wrong end of the stick, i thought you were saying that aside from your existing circle of friends you've struggled to meet new people and i was sort of saying i'd struggled to make any lol

i've never been to aya, is it a good'un? x

i can sympathise with the issue of actually making time to watch stuff. just moved into my first house in november and i'm living on a building site, constantly fighting to keep it tidy and so the only time i get to myself i'm working on my cosplay, so its hard to watch subbed stuff with your head down working.

as for gaming, im a big game fan but totally took advantage of my brother being a game-head with everything i'd never need and now i've moved out i don't have anything set up... i really miss it! im a big rpg fan particularly stuff like knights of the old republic series and mass effect.

bless you for saying that! it's my own fault, i just felt stupid going up to anyone, people seemed very happy in their little groups and i didn't feel i should bother anyone.

hadn't thought about aya but alot of people seem to love it, never been before. may have to consider it!

01 May 2013 - 11:32101880
I understand the meeting new people part as i have actually set up small little meets at expos before and then never managed to keep in contact with them. But then there are some people i have come across and they walk about as if they are better than everyone which to me makes no sense because we are all there for the same reason!

I've not been to aya before but I've heard it's really good and I've also heard that it is the last aya there will be sadly so YOU have to go

Yeah i totally get that. I mean, as much as we amass big groups at events, cosplaying is still a little left-field for a lot of people (general public) and in that sense it is still quite 'niche' so i don't think there's any room for people snobby like that

as for going to aya, i may do just that! x

Well all Spaces doe aya are gone but you can still go on the waiting list! so hopefully you will get a spot

Aya is really worth it if you can get on through the waiting list. There's always a possibility they may lay on more spaces- this has happened in the past- but that's not guaranteed.

I do try and do my hand sewing whilst watching anime but you can end up missing things because of the subs. It's also hard to keep up with stuff with watching western series too. I read a lot of manga on my train to work though.

how do you get a space? im registered on the site but don't have a clue what im doing x

01 May 2013 - 12:20101891
oh, ignore me, found it. so you have to have 50 quid upfront to register am i right?

01 May 2013 - 12:31101894
Once you registered you had a week to pay else you'd loose your space. Since its full now I think they'll put you on the waiting list and get in touch asking for payment if a space opens up.

Hiya!

Mingling is good. I really recommend joining up with a photoshoot or group at events. I used to hang out with the Hetalia cosplay group (don't judge me!) and made an effort to chat to people, and (here's the key bit!) exchange contact details with the people I got on with.

It doesn't have to be anything personal like a phone number, but even a Cosplay Island username is enough to make contact. And if you send them the photos you took of them, its another thing to talk about. Making a cosplay profile for Facebook (or Tumblr, Deviantart etc) is another good way to keep in touch with people until you know them well enough to become full friends.

I don't hang with the same crowds these days, but I'm still good friends with the people I connected with at the time.

Also 25 is not old! I've got a few years on you there

I am hoping to do some photoshoots in the future I've done some in the past and they were all quite fun. not really sure why I stopped XD

I agree with what PandoraCaitiff said about photoshoots and meets. I've normally done costumes with the guys I go with but last time I did a couple of bigger meets and got to speak to some really nice people. If you're all dressed from the same series/game it normally gives you some common ground for talking and breaking the ice off the bat. Also, if you keep an eye on forums for groups you may want to join before hand, chances are you'll have made contact with some people over the web before you meet face to face.

I decided I might hold a picnic where everyone brings food and sweets it would make a great way for people to mingle

Creative Cosplayers
I have never been to a convention due to my living location and found the internet a great way to see and talk to other Cosplayers.

I found DeviantArt a great place and way to meet creative Cosplayers. I believe true cosplay means you build yourself, and a lot of that happens on DeviantArt.

I joined this site a week or so ago, and hope to get to know people. I will be heading onto the mainland soon and will cosplay at a expo... don't know which?

So I too must mingle on here and hope for some great feedback on my builds!
