Smoothing down props?
I used some general wall plaster to try make a smoother surface for my prop sword and shield, but even after sanding I can't get the right sort of surface. Anyone got any other materials they could recommend??

constant sanding filling, from a rough grain down to a fine grain and then give it a buff with some wet sanding.
You may need to fill the cracks in with a poli filler and then sand those back down again.

If you started out with a rough surface it'll take a days worth of sanding at least to get it perfect

Yup. Like Sands says, you'll need to use more than one type of sandpaper (appropriate name there!)

Another alternative is to cover with a coat of something that will smooth out. Latex paint or paperclay maybe.

i use a mix of plaster of paris, mixed with pva glue, it sets rock solid but can still be sanded and tooled quite easy,

you would probally find wall plaster would crack easily
