|This is one of those rare times where I'm choosing the cosplay because I love the outfit design more than the character themselves. I really love the elegant shapes of the Midnight Mauve dress and I think that it really compliments Lightning's character design with a nice splash of colour that goes well with the soft pink of her hair. |
My actual favourite characters from the Final Fantasy XIII series are Hope, Fang and Sazh. Although Lightning was badass I felt that she was quite cold, especially when she kept trying to leave Sazh and Hope behind to fend for themselves in dangerous territory during the first half of the first game. Plus I tend to be drawn more towards expressive characters and Lightning is very stoic instead. But yes, I really love this outfit =) I'm hoping that I can wear it at a cosplay ball type of event sometime - possibly for the AyaCon 2014 Cosplay Ball if it arrives in time. If not then I can wear it for the next one that comes along.
You can edit the colour scheme of the outfits in an in-game menu, so I like to change the gloves and shoes from mauve to purple for some nice contrast and then add the black bunny ears as an accessory just because I like them. So I'd like to see if I can cosplay as the slightly edited version that I like to use in the game ^^

I first wore this for the Saturday of Minamicon 2015 so that I could also enter it into the Masquerade. I used the track "Eternal Wind" since I really loved listening to the NPC playing it on his guitar in the game. It was a bit of a shame that the game is set up to run on a big countdown timer considering I liked to stop to listen to it.
Despite the outfit being delivered late I think it was worth it because I'm really happy with the quality and the details of it. The gloves provided were too long in the fingers and a little loose around the arms, so I went hunting for another pair. I was really lucky actually because they ended up matching the colour of the shoes that I had bought really nicely ( and colour matching can be very hard ). I edited the shoes, cutting off what I could of the bow that was originally on the front of each one, and I attached a feather from HobbyCraft onto the side of each shoe with a mini glue gun that I bought. Thankfully the commissioner had thought to include tiny loops of material which would be needed to keep the top held on, so I went searching for transparent bra straps to buy and attach to the loops. I didn't think that they would be easy to find, but I eventually found some hiding in Marks and Spencers at the end of just one shopping trip and having already looked in most of the other clothes shops first.
I was a little disappointed that I couldn't get my fringe to spike despite having bought some hair gel and hair putty. And I am aware that this cosplay doesn't yet have the jewellery items and the little thin strap which sits across each of the shoes. To be honest I never really found the jewellery to be that noticeable in her design so I wasn't overly concerned about it, but if HobbyCraft has the right kind of pieces available then I might consider making the jewellery for another time.
This is definitely one of my favourite outfits now, and this is going to most likely be my go to outfit for any cosplay balls unless / until I do any other cosplays with shiney dresses in the future. Another advantage is that it doesn't quite drag on the floor too much so it should be easier to dance in than what I wore for the AyaCon Cosplay Ball.
