|It was my first ever convention and I really wanted to cosplay a Homestuck character, because it's my favourite thing ever.|
It took me a while to figure out which character I wanted to dress as, but in the end, I decided to go as Vriska. I really like the Thief of Light outfit (Also Vriska is amazing omg her character has developed so much and I love her bye.)
Due to me being a perfectionist, I really wanted to wear contacts. The trolls' sceleras are yellow, but since this was my first time wearing contacts I didn't want to risk damaging my eyes, or spend a lot of money on scelera lenses. So I then decided to buy white mesh lenses, thus, finally making the decision to be Vriska as she appeared when she met John in that dream bubble. ::::D
The hardest part was definitely crafting her wings. I made them out of coat hangers and plastic bags, but they came out great.
The horns were also pretty difficult...? I made them out of wire, PVA glue and paper towels with an acrylic paint coating. Every time I placed them on my head, they were waaaaaaaay too big for my liking. I had to keep sizing them down and it was very frustrating. I had really wanted a smooth texture but it was anything but that. Next time I will definitely save up for model magic clay.
Unfortunately I didn't have a lot of time (or money) to buy any grey body paint. My cousin let me borrow her black and white MAC facepaint to mix into grey, but I didn't have much time to mix or apply it on the day, and it was very patchy. It's apparent in the photos that my face is plastered in facepaint whereas my arms are the complete opposite. I have learned from this that I should buy some light grey snazaroo- which is what most Homestuck cosplayers seem to recommend.
When I wore it to the con, it was... well it was an experience! The wings were a nuisance since I kept walking into things (and people) with them. Luckily, they weren't damaged at the end of the day.
Overall, I am rather proud of the outcome and I hope I get the chance to wear it again soon!
