- Midlands MCM Expo 2013
- Ayacon 2013
My original plan for Midlands 2013 was going to be Rita Repulsa from Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, but that cosplay had to be put on hold due to work commitments in the three months beforehand - and to be honest, it worked out for the better as my Power Rangers partner in crime, FlyingMammal, was unable to attend. So, I needed a costume I could make quickly in the small amount of free time I had before the event, and after ordering the Dragonball Z boxsets (aka my childhood) I was hit with inspiration - why not make one of Bulma's outfits? I've always liked her, and one of my favourite outfits belonging to Bulma has always been the yellow dress she wears when she is on Namek - so after a quick Google image search I reckoned it was something I could throw together quickly.
I already owned a black long-sleeved shirt and black leggings that I could use instead of making my own, which also reduced the cost of the entire costume. The boots I used were a pair belonging to my sister, Mungojerrie, that she had previously used for a costume of her own but didn't plan to wear again. I ripped the old bootcovers I'd made for them off and made new ones for Bulma out of orange lycra that I already had and a scrap of black fabric.
I made the yellow dress out of yellow gabardine that I bought from the fabric shop where I work; whilst it was easy to make, I had to think about all the obvious seams that Bulma has on her dress and translate them to real life. I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out, especially the back as I like the triangle-shaped piece I made! :3 The black parts on the front were made from the same scrap as the black pieces on the boots, and the belt was one that I borrowed from my father.
The headband was a piece of red lycra that I recycled from a retired costume and hand-sewed into the right shape. I did originally plan to borrow a plain red hairband from my sister, but it sat weirdly on top of my head and my wig so I decided to make my own. The wig started off at butt-length (it was the only one I could find in a colour that I liked) and I chopped most of it off to make it the right length, and I also cut my own bangs into it. I'm really pleased with it as wigs aren't my specialty!
For props I borrowed a Five Star Dragonball that my sister owned, and I bought a Dragonball radar from eBay.
All in all I'm really happy with the way this cosplay turned out, especially as I made pretty much the entire thing in the week before the event! I can see this one getting re-worn a lot as it's quite cosy and comfortable.
