|I love Zelda! She’s one of my favourite heroines of all time. (Everyone who knows me knows I love pointy ears!) I made her Ocarina of Time version partly because of my aversion to pink (the SSBM costume is rather pinker), and partly because I didn’t want to make the Twilight Princess version. (It seems to be really popular anyway, there were quite a few at AmeCon 2008!)|
All the armour and solid pieces are made to look as accurate as possible, and instead of simply cutting out and sticking on the designs I have created an ‘engraved’ effect on the breastplate which I think is more true to the way it looks. It was sprayed and then hand painted and accented to give it that authentic colour and shine. I used several different shades of gold paint for a bronzy depth. I have used lilac satin for the dress, and satin backed dupion for the over top so it looks regal, and isn’t too hot or heavy. The fabric colours were very hard to match but I got there in the end! The crown was hand sculpted and the tabard was created with so much love and care! I’ve used many different techniques to make it look accurate.
Items made: Dress, overtop, armour and breastplate and backplate, crown, apron, belt, the wig was also hand-styled
Items bought: Socks, Shoes, gloves. I hate making gloves, so I bought them!
Things to revise: There are a few alterations I want to make, and would also like to make a cloak and bag to go with this costume and add some of my own interpretations. I would also like a new wig- one that I can style properly!
Some people quibble that I chose lilac instead of pink for the dress, and blue instead of purple for the apron. However, if you look at the classic trophy on SSBM (the Ocarina of Time version Zelda), the dress is closer to lilac than pink, and the apron is essentially very blue in my opinion. Also, a lot of people interpret the design on the breastplate to be raised. I think it looks more like it should be engraved. The only inaccuracy with this costume is that the shoes I bought have a strap across them! (I could have bought ones without, but walking around in them would be a real pain and the pink colours just weren’t right aside from this pair!)
Favourite part to make:
The breastplate, and the armour. I don’t know why, I just loved making it!
Favourite part of the finished costume:
The apron. I really think it turned out well and brought the costume together!
Any bad bits?:
The wig is, still, a stand in and I intend to get a longer, more accurate one as soon as I can (this was m Arisa wig, is parted on the side, and is too short to work with for Zelda).
Worn at: ReCon 16/10/08, Thoughtbubble Festival 15/11/08, KitaCon '09
KitaCon marked this costumes third event and it won't be the last so long as I keep building on and improving this costume! (Some parts broke on the jouney to KitaCon through very rough coach rides but this isn't the last we'll see of this costume ^^)
I'll definitely be wearing this again many many times!!!
