Journal

Mission Complete! (Posted 22nd September 2012)

At long last, the many months of hard work have finally paid off! I added the finishing touches to my outfit early last week and slipped it on for some photos. I am extremely relieved it's all over and at how the costume turned out in the end. The next step... wearing it to a convention!

An update (Posted 28th August 2012)

I've been a bit quiet lately due to other commitments but the costume is coming along very nicely. All elements of the outfit are now here and have been worked on in some form. Some parts like the jacket and cartridge belt are completely finished but the trousers and under shirt need a little more attention before I'm happy. Its well on the way to completion and I'm really pleased with the progress. I'll be posting some progress photos in the next few weeks and hopefully some finished ones before the end of September. I'm hoping to parade Cap about at a few cons before the end of the year, eeeeek!

So that's it. A short, sweet update on the Star Spangled Man.

Wield the shield! (Posted 11th August 2012)

As I write this journal entry, I've just finished work on another major part of my costume, the shield! Starting with a heater shield sourced online and several hours of attention I now have a finished WW2 shield. I must say I'm extremely pleased with the result!

Other developments include my box of goodies FINALLY clearing customs, giving me plenty to do during the evenings. More soon!

"Where's my helmet?" (Posted 5th August 2012)

After many hours of prepping, sanding, spraying and weathering the bulk of the helmet is finally complete, minus a few strap details to be added along the way. At the current moment this is as far as I can go with my costume as the majority of items ordered for it have been stuck in customs clearance for the last 3 days... Let's hope they clear and find themselves to me asap, I'm super excited to continue!

It begins. (Posted 31st July 2012)

Over the past week or so I've spent many hours browsing various Army Surplus websites and eBay to track down the materials needed to create this costume.
Fortunately I located the large majority of what I need on a site that creates replicas of original WW2 uniforms. A result! Unfortunately being based in the US, the cost of postage to the UK was a 3rd of the total price! The items are as new replicas, meaning each piece will need weathering to give it that authentic, beaten up look.

I bought a pair of boots a year or so ago which coincidentally are a pretty close match to the ones worn by Cap. A bit of sand paper to these will add some realism to the outfit. I have also located a real WW2 Paratrooper Helmet on eBay, which with some TLC and spray paint will fix up to be a perfect Cap Helmet.

Once these items arrive I can begin crafting, wish me luck!
