Chocobo Fun!

Costume Information

Cost : £60
Time Taken : I really never keep track!

I decided I would do something rather different for Auchinawa and made myself a Chocobo rider! This was my first attempt at making something of this kind and I was really pleased with the results.

The main body of the chocobo was constructed from pvc tubing (15mm diameter plumbing stuff) I made two circular pieces large enough to get over my hips and secured them with an awful lot of gaffer tape. I joined the two with four uprights and completed the shape with two long pieces to create a sort of banana shape.

The body was created using large pieces of 15mm foam hot glued to the main structure. The skin was made from a combination of fur, stretch poly velour, felt and feathers.

The tail feathers were made using felt with a narrow seam placed down the centre of each one with a lightweight alluminum sculpting wire slotted down the channel.

The chocobo's head started life as a large hollow polystrene ball which I built up using wadding and covered in fur using both hotglue and hand stitching. I made the eyes with acrylic paint on a larger of plastic cut from a small plastic bottle with a second layer with the top. Eyelids were made using thin pieces of real leather. The beak is more stretch velour with a light wash of acrylic paint to highlight the edges of the beak. I created the harness for the costume with some brown petersham

The feet started out as a cheap pair of shoes which I glued down just wide enough to slot my feet into. I then layered up the feet using yet more of the foam hot glued to the shoe and stretch velvet over layered. The ankles were stitched to a handmade pair of tights using the same stretch fabric.

An old pair of braces was stitched into the main structure of the costume to make the supports for the chocobo itself. The stretch quality of the braces (the heavy elastic kind) gave the costume a great comedy 'bounce' as I moved.

I ran out of time due to my son being somewhat of a handful and as such didn't get the chance to create the rider costume I'd wanted with comedy legs.

Sadly the chocobo is no more having been thrown in a skip as I was moving house and had to lose a lot of my costumes due to storage issues. An awful lot of my costuming has ended up the same way!

Hahaha! This is absolutely brilliant and looks like so much fun to have made and worn!
