|Eagle General Mahmut and Poison General Zaganos, worn at Ayacon 2011! |
I actually cosplayed Mahmut for the sole reason of getting more people into Shoukoku no Altair (I've yet to meet anyone who recognised me or even knew about the series that I hadn't introduced it to). It's one of my all time favourite mangas and it was only until I realised how much work it would be that I decided to enter the cosplay competition at Ayacon to give myself motivation so I could do him justice!
I was incredibly lucky with all aspects of this cosplay. I found a fabric that I was really happy with (dull in colour so it didn't look too modern, heavy enough to tailor a jacket yet light enough to drape and with an expensive sheen that didn't look 'synthetic shiny' [my pet peeve] for just £4 a metre.
The Eagle and talons were just paper mache covered in paperclay- hand detailed and then hand painted using mainly acrylics and gold leaf. The details on the Talons were Children's decorative material glue with embedded pearls and strung pearls wound around. They actually weren't very heavy at all- but the long cuts of fabric wound around the base hat and turban were! It ended up giving me pretty sore neckache (Sorry if I was a bit grumpy at Ayacon- this is why + a huuuge hangover from the night before- I blame Yuki giving me straight vodka in a water bottle)
There are a few details that I want to finish and hopefully will be doing so this year, as well as dulling the eagle so the gold isn't so bright, like in the reference.
I loved being Mahmut (minus when I was asked to move seats and ended up not seeing the rest of the competition because the person behind me couldn't see the stage + walking into random objects because I forgot my head was a lot bigger than it used to be + when I totally walked off stage into some black curtain that apparently wasn't the exit and had to shuffle awkwardly out and felt like dying of embarrassment) and have plenty of his other outfits planned! I really appreciated all the support everyone gave me, too, because I was so nervous about making something so big! Massive love to Berniebear who helped me sew poppers on the night before and Yukioto who helped me edit my audio! (because I'm technologically retarded)
