|An avid Grandia fan, I fell in love with Millenia the moment she appeared in the game. Upon looking at her costume design more, I also fell in love with that. Its such a unique costume, and I knew it would definately pose a challenge.|
There was nothing I could buy to use for any of the parts really, the only things I did get were a plain top to use for her under-top and some platform boots that I built up upon.
The shoulders of the jacket have foam inserts in them to keep their shape, and the corset was boned so that it stood out at that angle (I dont have any hips at all, so I had to try and exaggerate her shape a lot!). Bias binding and gold guter pens were my friend for this costume, and pretty much made the detailing on it, along with a few gems I managed to find in the local craft store.
The boots were generic platform ankle boots from Shoezone, which were covered with material and decorated.
The hair is probably the main reason I choose her, really. I'd never done anything with wigs before, and I thought, 'hey, that will be fun!'. I wasn't wrong, it was a *lot* of fun to make, but dear lord it took ages. The reason why the costume cost so much to make was because I bought two high quality wigs, costing about £70 in total. The colour isn't very accurate, but at the time there were'nt any sellers that did 'anime' colours in nice wigs. It was a horrid joke shop wig, or these :P
One wig was worn naturally, with the bangs cut in, and the other was chopped up to form her 'horns'. The shape was carved out of upholstery foam, spray painted the same colour as her hair (just in case it showed through) and then covered carefully with bits of the massacred wig. I did have great visions of making the white horn bits at the end out of something impressive, but I ended up using insulation tape wrapped tightly around the hair. The two horns and her back ponytail were attached to foam underneath that velcroed onto the main wig, creating an obscene mass of hair. It sat okay on my head, but damn it got heavy after a while.
All of this was made in the very cramped conditions of student accomodation, which made spraying and ironing very fun! I also could't see what the whole thing looked like until I got to the hotel and used the full-length mirror there :D
I first made her for Minamicon 10, but re-wore her the next year alongside Mana's Elena costume and Inky's Roan. She was worn *again* when we got another mini group at London Expo 2005, where I was joined by Mana with her updated Elena and Nietche's Ryudo. Worn enough, and falling apart she was finally binned! There is so much I would change if I re-made her, but I dont hate myself that much to go through all that again XD
