Description
This is the third (and hopefully final) time I am going to make this.

Totally redoing this, from scratch, every single bit of it. I'll be using cotton, so its cooler and less shiny, and will be sticking as close as possible to the DS design.
I'm going to take my time with this. Starting now as I'd love to get this out for AyaCon next year, with a possible Final Fantasy IV group.

18/08/2008: Bought 5 metres of material today, lovely emerald green cotton. And also found a nice pattern to use for the dress, McCalls M5094. Which I am going to edit somewhat so it has the slits up both sides.

19/08/2008: Cut the pattern out before work today, and then had to go to work. Wah. Came home, pinned the pieces to the material, cut them out, and started pining the whole thing together.
Looks okay, needs a bit of editting here and there (taking in and the like) and the gathering I've done is a bit slap-dash.
(Photo and pinning to me credits go to my sister. She's sitting right next to me watching me type this. And grinning. Stupidly.)

20/08/2008: Did some tacking and fixing this morning and at work (yep, started taking my sewing to work again. WIN.) Then when I got home I did the rest of the main bits of sewing for the dress, fixed the zip into place and hemmed the dress.
Hemming was fun. Had to take the dress up a fair bit as Rydia's dress is... well... small. So this is possibily the shortest thing I'm going to have ever worn.
Seriously.

21/08/2008: I cut the slits up the side and hemmed them nicely, so the dress isn't so floaty and there are some appropriate height slits up either side. I bought some ribbon to hem the bottom with (yay. more ribbon). I'm going to get some green bias binding and also get a length of polytester for the straps, and also for the line of beads and trinkets Rydia has attached to her dress.

22/08/2008: Today has be a very productive day. So yay!
I managed to get all the gold ribbon lining sewn onto the bottom of the dress. I bought some green bias binding which I'm going to start on tomorrow for the top hem.
I bought some white fimo which is so much fun! I used it to make the head dress, which was surprisingly easy and is also surprisingly sturdy. I'm still debating how to have it attached to my head. Clips or a bit of elastic around my head under the wing. Descisions, decisions.
Planning on painting it tomorrow.

Then I hope to get started on the boots. Eek.

24/08/2008: So I set myself to make the boot covers today.
Which I did. Twice.
I made them first out of leatherette. Wasn't hard. Pinned the leatherette around my boot, sewed it together and the hot glued it to the boot. Spray painted the leatherette and waited for it to dry.
And waited.
And waited.
Leatherette does not like spray paint, apparently because the bloody stuff kept shedding. I thought I could deal with it, but when I was pinning them on to try them out I gave up and got annoyed and unstuck the leatherette from my boot.
Then basically followed the same pattern as before but with cotton. wHICH IS MUCH, much better! So now I have to PAINT the things.

28/08/2008: Sooo... what have I done on this lately...
I made the boots, as stated above. And I've started to paint on the pattern on the front. I'm going to sew on the ribbon lining around the top of the boot covers before I start doing any more painting. Its a real PAIN because they flop over, and its a pain also because stuffing the boots with paper (which I've been doing to make them sturdy when painting) makes the actual boot fall over.
Ugh.

Anyhow. Gonna get some more material on pay day and try to start the sleeves and cape over the weekend. I think I'mma have to go into work early on Friday and go bonkers in FabricLand again. Whee.

19/11/2008: Got some inspiration to work on this today. So i bought some more cotton for the main segments and then looked for a lining for the cape.
The reason?
If you look at the lining of Rydia's cape, its decorated. And when you look at the back of the cape its really plain (had to STARE at the MV sequence to figure that out) so I bought myself some new fabric from Fabric Land to right: chinese woven silk (which pushed the budget out of the sodding window) and added that to the lining to make it stand out. C:

20/11/08: Bought some gold crushed chiffon and some other stuff for the sash and centre of the tabbard.
Blah blah. Who gives a crap.

20/11/2008 cont.
Made the sash. Have made about four of these so very easy. Just a case of measuring, pinning and running through the machine.
Also made the under sleeves (Rydia wears kind of skin tight sleeves under her bigger ones). Were originally white t-shirt fabric sewn to fit around my arm. They've since been dyed green and have a hole cut to allow my middle fingr through like in the ref art work.
Will be added strips of gold craft foam to the tops shortly.

Comments

well I've liked your other rydia versions so far, so I have no doubt this will be just as great to see. Oh and a FFIV sounds cool, I'd be up that if I can make it to Ayakon for it

Journal

Main sewing (Posted 2 Months Ago)

What I'm hoping to get done by mid-December is get all the big bits of sewing done. So thats the sleeves (which I'm planning on starting shortly) and get any big detail sewing done (central strip of green on the tabbard).
Once those are all done, I can contentrate on all the fiddling details: the trinkets she wears around her waist. All the decorative painting of gold on the sleeves and the boots. And all the painting of green on the dress.
Getting those done will be my main aim for January.
Fun times.
