Description
Higurashi (aka When They Cry) quickly became one of my favourite anime series when I started watching it, and Rena is my favourite character. I wasn't particularly interested in her school uniform - when you've seen one fuku you've seen them all, pretty much - but I loved her white dress so I decided to make that. The dress itself was a bit tricky as you can't seem to get dress patterns like that! What I ended up doing was getting a pattern for a blouse with short, puffy sleeves and a high collar, then another pattern for a long, wide skirt and stuck the pieces together. I think it came out quite well. The blouse was McCall's pattern M5181 and the skirt was Burda pattern 8427. I rushed to finish this for Minamicon, which is never a good idea (you'd think I'd have learned after all this time, wouldn't you?). As a result, its original incarnation was in need of many, many fixes. The sleeves needed reinforcing - the seams were constantly tearing - the hem was all over the place (especially in the back) and the bows just weren't working - their corners were too sharp. I made these fixes so I could put the dress on display at the London Film and Comic Con and I think it looks much better now. Like Ririn, this is one of my favourite costumes and it's been a lot better made than most of my costumes from the past, so I want to be able to wear it again - and will, next time I get the chance!
