|When I decided to make Chi, it was before Chobits hit big and the cosplay circuit was over saturated with Chi cosplayers, but because I like individuality, I still chose one of her less recognized outfits. |
I made this costume almost 10 years ago. It was the first cosplay I actually put effort into making. I absolutely love it. I have worn it several places and my cousin and best friend have also worn it. It is getting worn out now, and it is time to retire it, but I keep it listed as a fond memory.
It has actually gone through several incarnations since the beginning. Originally, I did not have a wig, bloomers, or the hat. I could not find anything on how to make the "dutch girl" style hat, so I just used a kerchief. All the small pieces, like the collar and sleeves, plus the socks and shoes were changed after a while, due to being misplaced or outgrown.
I made the dress with no pattern, so I was very self conscious about the amateur quality of it. Added to my general shyness, I felt very awkward the first 2 times I wore it.
I actually got coaxed to enter the cosplay contest at each of those 2 appearances, and won something each time. The first time I won "Best Craftsmanship". I did not even have the wig or the proper petticoat back then, and am pretty sure I won merely because of my crazy hair, which no one believed was really mine. I had literally just finished the dress in the hotel room an hour before hand. The second time I won "2nd Place Overall" but it was a small event with only about 10 competitors, and only 2 or 3 of us had costumes with any effort at all.
I don't really think that, had there been real competition, I would have done good at all in either of those contests, but the way it was received made me become a lot more confident about myself and my sewing ability, and I will always be grateful for it.
