|This was a very last-minute thing: with a few weeks to go until Minami 12, I suddenly decided I wanted to cosplay. The Bleach filler arc had just started at the time and I was very taken with Ririn's costume, so I decided to make that.|
I'm proudest of the cloak. The cape bit wasn't very hard and since it was made from fleecey-type fabric it didn't even need to be hemmed (and it was so thick that hemming it would have been a nightmare, too). The collar was made with buckram and I bought an eyelet kit to put the "eyes" in. That involved getting a hammer and smacking things. Oh man, that was fun. The fabric was wrapped over the outside of the collar (before putting the eyelets in, of course) and sewn to the interfacing, then the tops of the cape (which I'd left long) were attached on the inside to keep it all together. The "beak" was made by cutting a broad triangle shape and rolling it into a cone, then stitching it up and stuffing it to keep its shape. I think it looked brilliant, really raven-like. I even did a blanket stitch along the top to match Ririn's collar in the anime, but it's impossible to see unless you're right up next to it. Bah!
I made a few fixes to the costume before London Expo so it looked a lot better than it did at Minami 12 (the only photo of which has now been removed from this page forever! Hah!). I got myself a wig - pretty much perfect for the character and reasonable enough quality considering it cost me all of £12.50 - my makeup and posing is a lot better, and I've tailored the dress a bit so it looks more flattering. And I've gotten some really cute shoes, too! I have to conclude, though, that there's not much love out there for the Bleach filler arc - only one person recognised me! And I walked past so many Bleach cosplay groups, too! Awww.
