|I keep meaning to get around to doing a Metal Gear Solid cosplay at some point. Technically my very first cosplay was actually Olga Gurlukovich from Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, but with it being my very first cosplay I wasn't happy enough with it to count. |
I've been considering cosplaying as Mei Ling since she was my favourite member of Snake's back-up team and her outfit has a nice splash of colour to it compared to a lot of the other outfits in the series. This will probably be for either 2012 or 2013. I do have some ideas in mind for other Metal Gear cosplays as well, but I'll just put this one up for now...
This will most likely take priority over my Meryl cosplay, which I may or may not end up doing anymore since that was going to be a joint cosplay with a friend who has since retired his Solid Snake cosplay.
I'm hoping that I can get this together in time for the Thursday of Eurogamer 2012 now that Hideo Kojima has been announced as attending as a guest on that day. I'd heard that he was expected to re-visit England again sometime in September, was just waiting to hear when and where ^^
UPDATE: ( 28/9/12 )
So I was able to successfully wear this to the Thursday of Eurogamer as planned and I was actually happier with how this cosplay came together than I expected to be. The shade of purple I got after dying it turned out to be the perfect shade for her and the couple of darker patches don’t seem to have shown up as badly as I was expecting them to. I was actually fortunate enough to find a pair of suitable purple heels in the end after a LOT of searching and only finding ridiculously painful-looking and decorated fashion heels or open-toed sandals in that colour. I’m not used to wearing heels in general so I had to be very careful not to hurt myself while walking and had to be very patient when trying to get anywhere because I could only take small steps ^^” I did make sure to plan in advance though so I also took a pair of flat shoes along with me to wear on the way to and back from the event.
Prop-wise I felt that she really needed a head-set and I also thought that it would be a good idea to give her a clipboard with the Foxhound logo on the back and with some relevant-looking data sheets clipped to it. I considered maybe putting together a page with some images and data of Snake or images and data of each of the boss characters. In the end I went with having a picture of a Mei Ling and Snake Codec conversation with a Soliton radar map image beneath it ( since both would be more relevant to Mei Ling herself and she was the one that designed Snake’s Codec and Soliton radar ).
I wasn’t able to get into Kojima’s talk unfortunately despite turning up to that area 15 minutes before it was due to start. It filled up and then the staff told me that he wasn’t going to be around afterwards to do autographs, either. So that was disappointing but at least I’ve been able to meet him and get autographs before. There’s not many pictures because I was wandering around solo until Hitmanx2 ( cosplaying as Otacon ) found me in the last half hour before I was due to go. So I made sure to pop along to the free cosplay photography area so that I at least had a couple of shots of this cosplay ( and many thanks to the photographer for helping me with how to tie her tie correctly – the thought only occurred to me about not knowing how to do them when I was on the coach to London ). Shortly after joining Hitmanx2 we found a Sniper Wolf and another Otacon and thought it would be a good idea if we got a picture in front of the area which had all the Metal Gear games in the series available to play. Luckily enough we found that most of the other MGS cosplayers happened to be there so we were able to get a group picture before I had to leave. We ended up having quite a number of other people stop to take pictures while we were all there, too =) It was also kinda amusing getting to sit around playing some of the Metal Gear games while cosplaying as her and I loved the 25th anniversary posters that the staff put down for us to take.
I’m looking forward to when I can next wear this again and hopefully do a proper photoshoot with her ( though it won’t be for this October’s Expo since I’m already committed to two other cosplay groups for the Friday and the Sunday and am really eager to wear my new Margarete cosplay that I never got the chance to wear yet ).
Obtained Black Tie (Posted 19th September 2012)
Got the black tie - not much more to say =)
Dyed Jacket & Skirt / Wig Arrived (Posted 16th September 2012)
So I dyed the jacket and skirt and also some spare white fabric so that I can later make those military-style shoulder bits in the same colour. As expected it didn't go 100% perfectly... >_< There are a couple of areas where the dye seems to have gathered in greater concentration resulting in a slightly darker patch. I think I'm going to go ahead and wear it as is though - with the most suitable white jacket I could find costing me £39-something I don't exactly feel like forking out for another one. It also niggles me a bit that areas of stitching have remained white, but since the only artwork of Mei Ling's outfit tends to be a bit vague on the smaller details I'm just going to go with it. The colour did actually come out a really good shade for her, however.
I've also got my wig through the post. It wasn't quite what I was expecting. It actually came as a long-length wig that's tied up in a high pony-tail with a band, and then I got a clip-on ponytail in a seperate bag. I was expecting it to be a short-haired base wig designed for me to clip the clip-on ponytail straight onto like with the one I got for my Dana cosplay. So I'm going to have to think about what the best way to style it is since strands keep coming loose when I'm putting it on with it as a tied-up long wig and the fringe isn't quite as it looked in the photo.
Next I need to look around for a suitable head-set so that she can keep in touch with the team =)
Sourced & Ordered Wig (Posted 21st August 2012)
I've now chosen and ordered the wig which was actually pretty easy to find seeing as I only had to look for the correct hairstyle and didn't have to worry about looking for the perfect shade as well (seeing as black is just black) ^_^
Sourced Plain White Jacket (Posted 15th May 2012)
I've been keeping an eye out for either a light violet jacket or a white one that I could dye the correct colour for quite some time now. I've finally found a white one online which looks suitable with pretty much the correct shapes to everything. I should be able to collect it in-store ( for free delivery ) on Friday, so I'll check that it fits and then I can start looking into dying it with the purple dye I bought a few weeks back. Dying fabric is something I'm new to so I'll test it on a scrap piece of white material first and probably dilute it a bit more than is required ( since I want it quite light anyway ) and layer it up afterwards if I feel that it needs to be any stronger.
