|I fell in love with Studio Ghibli's The Cat Returns the first time I watched it, and decided then and there that I HAD to be Haru and that my best friend, who also loves cats, had to be The Baron.|
So that decided, we then bought a huge amount of expensive fabrics from the lovely people at Shepherd's Bush Market and together with my period costume designer friend Alexia's help, we made the Gold Cat Princess Dress.
The dress comes apart in two pieces, the bodice and the skirt. The cartoon animators really had no idea how a Tudor dress is constructed, which gave Alexia a big headache in making the dress work. In the end, we had to use ribbon to attach the sleeves to the bodice, bound across the back, and we made the skirt with simple elastic.
The sleeves are made of off-white satin, the ruff is made of white organza, the bodice is made of some very precious, expensive Korean gold sequined fabric, and the skirt is made of gold lame overlaid with some thin white see-through silk.
I used wire and black netting for the heartshape behind the dress, with Primark plastic pearls adorning it, and gold jewelry making clay and gold leaf for the fish pendant necklace.
The cat ears I made from furry tan fabric and pink felt from an online tutorial, and I think they need to be improved somewhat because they don't stay up the right way all the time!
