|Ursula's just the best female character in Breath of Fire IV. I love her attitude, and her costume is really interesting! Working on this costume turned out to be the biggest stretch of my costuming abilities so far as it involved so many different techniques, and although I still have a lot to learn, it was great experience and I like how it came out.|
The pauldrons were made using paper mache, wonderflex and friendly plastic, as per this tutorial. I did attempt to put straps on them to keep them on my shoulders but it didn't work very well, which is why I'm standing like a tank or posing with one hand on my hip in most of my photos! I'm going to figure out a more secure method of keeping them on my shoulders for London Expo.
The trousers were slightly modified from Simplicity pattern 3626 - they were cut to a 3/4 length and cut into a different shape on the inside legs in order to accommodate the gaps. The top was havily modified from New Look pattern 6203 - I designed it so that it folded down on both shoulders rather than just the one, and traced points onto both the front and back to get the flaps and the flares at the sides. The "jewels" were bra cups that I painted with metallic green paint and I thought they looked great in the end! The flares were stiffened with buckram in between the outer fabric and the lining.
The tail was jointed so (in theory) it moves naturalistically when I walk! I made it by cutting a long, cylindrical foam swimming aid into segments and threading a length of string through the centre of each one, tying knots in the string as I went along. The bottom of the tail was made in the same way, but using a foam football to get the right level of bulk.
The gun will be built on top of a toy pirate's pistol. The ears were a pair of World of Warcraft Night Elf ears that I painted.
